At first the Internet was only used by the government, but,in the early l970s,universities,hospitals and banks were allowed to use it too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use.By the start of the 1990s,computers became cheaper and easier to use.Scientists had also developed software(软件)that made‘surfing’(浏览)the Internet more convenient.

Today it is easy to get on-line(上网)and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day.Sending e-mail is more and more popular among students.

I Left My Glasses At Home

Half a year ago Mrs. Black fell into the river while she was doing some washing there. Luckily some young men saved her. She had a high fever that evening and her son bought some medicine for her. She didn't take it after she felt a little better. From then on she could hardly(几乎没有)hear anything. And people had to talk her loudly(大声地)and this often brought her a little trouble. So one day her daughter said to her loudly, "You'd better go to see a doctor, mother!"

Mrs. Black thought it was right and agreed with her. Her daughter drove a car and took her to clinic(诊所)and then hurried to work. Mrs. Black went in and found nobody there and began to knit(织)a sweater. Before long a nurse came in and said, "We close afternoon, Granny. Come here tomorrow".

The old woman nodded(点头), but she didn't leave and went on knitting. The nurse said it again more loudly, but Mrs. Black said nothing and was still sitting in the waiting-room. Now the nurse understood what it meant. She brought out a piece of paper and wrote on it, "We close this afternoon." Then she handed it to the old woman. Mrs. Black looked at it carefully for a long time and then returned it to the nurse.

“I'm sorry, madam,” said the old woman, “I left my glasses at home!”
