On 26th December, 2004, there was a big earthquake under the Indian Ocean Area.It was the most powerful earthquake in the world in the past 40 years.The earthquake caused a large tsunami.The wall of water was so high as 20 meters.The tsunami attacked twelve countries in southeast Asia and killed thousands of people.It was the biggest natural disaster in 2004.

  A newspaperman from Shanghai survived the disaster.He wrote his story and put it in his home page.He wrote, “It was 9∶15, 26th December, 2004.my wife and I went to the seaside to have breakfast.The blue sea looked quiet and beautiful.Many people in swimming costumes were enjoying the bright sunshine in the sea, on the chairs or under the trees.They were having a great time.”

  “At the very beginning we heard a big noise like a bomb while I was walking on the beach with my wife.People in the sea ran wildly towards the bank and screamed, ‘Water is coming!Water is coming!’ The wall of water made the boats and people fall over.We ran to a higher place as quickly as we could.We didn’t find a shelter until we ran about 3 kilometers.”

  “We looked back below the small hill and saw a terrible picture.The flow(水流) of water was so strong that ears fell upside down.The flood washed away everything on the seaside.”

  Up to 3rd January, 2005, the number of victims as a result of the earthquake and tsunami was over 140,000.The largest number of victims was in Indonesia.And it is said that half of the victims were children.

  26th December of the year 2004 was the unluckiest day.People call the day “Black Sunday”.
