In the past twenty years, riding bicycles has become more and more popular among people of all ages. 83 Bicycles have long played an important part in the lives of American young people. But today an even greater number of adults cycle along roadsides and bicycle paths(自行车专用道). These new riders are often trying to become fit or lose weight. They have found that bicycling is a pleasant way to stay healthy.

This is certainly good for health. But it has also brought some problems. With all these added people on the road, bicycle safety has become a matter of real importance.

Bicycle safety is mostly a matter of common sense. People should ride only on bicycle paths where they will not be badly hurt. There are also a number of rules that riders should follow, especially when riding on streets or highways. Bicyclists should never ride against the traffic, nor should they carry other people on their bicycles. They are also supposed to ride in single line on busy streets and to walk bicycles across the busy intersections (交叉路口) . 84By following these rules, bicycle riders will not only stay healthy but also be safe.

In one recent year, the National Safety Council reported that 34 thousand bicycle riders were hurt in highway accidents. In that same year, another six hundred riders were killed. Since the introduction of crash helmets (头盔) in 1980, the number of injuries (伤者) and deaths from bicycling accidents had gone down. Today, more and more riders realize the dangers of bicycling. They are wearing helmets and paying closer attention to cycling rules.

The BBC was founded(建立) in 1922, including radio and television services, based at Broadcasting (广播) House in London.

The BBC is controlled(控制) by some governors(管理人员) sent by the government but these people have complete freedom and the government can’t interfere(干涉). That is, the BBC is not the mouthpiece (代言人) of the government. It has to be as fair as possible in giving radio and television time to, for example, political parties and religious (宗教) groups.

There is a kind of interesting service in Britain----rental services. Many people prefer to rent (pay money regularly for the use of) their television sets instead of buying them.

The rent for a black-and-white TV set is about 80 pence a week (1980). The rent of a color set is more than twice that of a black-and-white set. If the sets go wrong, people can have them repaired free of charge or replaced (take the place of) immediately.

Everyone who owns to rent a television set has to pay a yearly licence. There is no advertising on BBC radio or television. It is from the sale of licence that the BBC gets most of its money. A licence for a black-and-white set costs £ 18, and for a color set £ 18 a year.

There are four specialized radio channels, which broadcast different kinds of programs. Radio 1 is mainly pop music. Radio 2 deals with light music, sport and other programs. Radio 3 broadcasts serious music, talks on serious subjects, etc. News broadcasts are mainly given by Radio 4.

There are special programs for Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and certain parts of England. The BBC also broadcasts as well as in English to all parts of the world.

Some British and American people like to invite friends for a meal at home. You should not be upset if your English friends don't invite you home. It doesn't mean they don't like you.

Dinner parties usually start between 7 p. m. and 8 p. m. and end at about 11 p. m. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It's polite to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine as a gift.

Usually the evening starts with drinks and snacks. If you want to be extra polite, say how much you like the room,or the pictures on the wall. But remember---it's not polite to ask how much the things cost.

In many families, the husband sits at one of the table and the wife sits at the other end. They eat with their guests(客人).

You'll probably start the meal with soup or something small, and then you'll have meat or fish with vegetables, and then dessert, followed by coffee. It's polite to finish everything on your plate and to take more if you want it.

Did you enjoy the evening? Call your hosts the next day, or write them a short "thank you" letter. British and American people like to say "thank you, thank you" all the time!
