【题目】 Have you seen your horse prepare for winter? Although it is getting warmer and warmer, many animals are still hibernating (冬眠). It’s too bad that humans can’t hibernate. In fact, we humans almost did.

According to Graham Robb, a British, who has studied the sleeping habits of the French farmers, in the past, farmers in France liked a half-state of human hibernation. As soon as the weather turned cold, people all over France would shut themselves indoors and practice the forgotten art of doing nothing at all for months.

Jeff Warren, a producer at CBC Radio’s The Current, tells us that the way we sleep has changed greatly since the invention of electric lighting. The business of eight hours continuous sleep is a modern invention.

When historians began studying the texts of the Middle Ages, they noticed something regarded as “first sleep”. Now scientists are telling us that people in ancient times most possibly slept in separate periods.

In the past, without the electric light, humans went to sleep when it became dark and then woke themselves at midnight. The late night period was called “The Watch”. It was when people actually kept watch against wild animals, although many of them simply moved around or visited family and neighbors.

Some sleep researchers think that a short period of insomnia (失眠) at midnight is not a problem. It is normal. Humans can experience another state of consciousness around their sleeping, which happens in the short period before we fall asleep or wake ourselves in the morning. This period can be an especially creative time for some people. The inventor, Thomas Edison, used this state to invent many of his new ideas.

Playing with your sleep patterns can be dangerous, and it will lead to worries. Medical science doesn’t help much in this case. It offers us medicines for a full night’s continuous sleep, which sounds natural; however, according to Warren’s theory, it is really the opposite of what we need.

【题目】 It was a perfect June day. My family and I decided to go whitewater rafting (急流泛舟). My father decided to bring us to go without a guide at this new, hard situation. Mom and I were upset by my dad’s decision, but my brother was pleased with it. Then we took a bus to the icy cold water. Having received the training, we began our own rafting.

Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to get us off the rocks. After about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river. It was coming out of the water about ten feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow, we ended up on top of this rock. Then water started rushing towards my brother. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back. Unfortunately, we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only get to my brother. My dad jumped onto the bank of the river to see where I was. At that moment I was picked up by a man in another raft. I kept crying. Thankfully, everyone was fine.

When we got back in our raft, we had only two paddles for four people. We all knew it was going to take long to get to the end. One of the guides for another raft told us that there was an earlier place we could get out, but we had to carry our raft and walked for a mile. At that point, no one really cared if we had to do anything after we got out of the water. We finally got to the ending point, wet and cold.

To this day, I have never felt so cold in my life. I have not been rafting again. All of this happened because my dad did not hire a guide.

C.wanted to get out of the water as soon as possibleD.were so careless that they noticed nothing

4What does the passage mainly talk about?

【题目】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. So is music, whether you listen to it on the radio on your drive to work. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. 1

Both language and music have a writing system. In English we record language using a collection of letters. In the same way, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. 2 By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read the ideas or hear the music of someone who lived hundreds of year ago, which is really amazing.

3 You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the chance to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation. 4 If you don’t like Britain pop music, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.

Both share feelings. How do you know that I am angry? Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. 5 Music can show you exactly how the musician was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that feeling. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. On the other hand, you would surely listen to sad music when you were feeling down.

A.Both have to do with culture.

B.Here are some of their similarities.

C.They have some separate characters.

D.Just as you read English, you can read music.

E.This also means that there is something for everyone!

F.This means everyone can learn both language and music!

G.Like language, music can sound angry, sorry as well as happy.
