David Ho is one of the most famous scientists in the world because of his research on fighting AIDS.

He was born in 1952 in Taiwan, China. He was given the name He Dayi. Dayi means “Great One” in Chinese. His family moved to the United States when he was 12 years old.

David was a smart student and he first studied Physics. He quickly realized that he was interested in life science,so he went to Harward Medical School. It was there that he saw people who had AIDS. In the early 1980s, AIDS was almost unknown and Ho made up his mind to study this mysterious (难解的) killer disease.

Ho discovered that the HIV virus(病毒) could live in a healthy person’s body for years. He realized that the earlier a person with HIV is treated, the longer he will live.

His work is very important. With the help of his research, combinations of drugs (合成药) have been developed and the lives of thousands of people have been saved. The whole world was grateful to him. Because of his work, he was named Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1996.

At 37, he was appointed (任命) Director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Centre in New York. In recent years,he has been doing research on making a vaccine (疫苗) against AIDS. If Ho finds a vaccine for AIDS, he will become an international hero.

【题目】 Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events—love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells reallife stories and sounds the way people really talk, as life becomes more complicated(复杂的)it is good to hear music about ordinary people.

Country music, sometimes called country western, comes from two lands of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the West. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars.

At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.

Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada—in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty four hours a day. English stars sing it in British and people in other countries sing it in their own languages.
