     Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the whole fence (栅栏) in front of the house. He thought of the other boys out for the day enjoying themselves and he felt very unhappy. Then he had an idea!He picked up the brush and started painting slowly and carefully. Soon,his friend Ben Rogers appeared,eating an apple. Tom pretended (假装) not to see him.

    “Tom!” Ben said. “Why are you working?”

    “I won’t do it wrong. I'll be really careful. I'll give you my apple. ” Tom gave him the brush and paint with a sad face,but in his heart he was glad. His trick had worked.

     After Ben got tired and left,other boys came along and Tom said the same things to them. Soon,the whole fence was painted white,but not by Tom. He felt very clever because he had discovered something important about the way people are. People only want what they can't have or want to do what they shouldn’t do.

Dear Addie,

     Greetings from New Jersey,how is New Zealand? Tm very excited to have you as my pen pal. I guess it’s my turn to tell you about myself.

     First off,I live with my parents,two sisters,and our pet dog Brighty. Our town is called Whippangong. It is only about half an hour away from New York City. My oldest sister,Ingrid,just turned 17,and that means she now has a drive’s  license. She drives us to the mall. Is there a mall near your home in Te Awamutu? My other sister is 11 and her name is Lucy. I guess I would say that she is my best friend. We still fight,though. She rides horses and takes lessons every Saturday morning. I have to go with her sometimes,and that is truly the most boring thing in the world. Do you like horses?

     I take tap dancing classes. I like to practice in the food store. The sound of my feet stepping on the hard Hoors echoes (发出回声) . I play soccer in fall; I'm on the swim team during summer. I like swimming,but I am really looking forward to diving this year. Next year I will start music lessons in school. I think I am going to play the piano.

     Our house has eight rooms and a small backyard where every year we try to grow vegetables. We mostly get zucchini because the rabbits eat anything else. I guess rabbits don't like zucchini. I have a bike and mum allows me to ride up and down our street,but nowhere else. I hope that I will get to ride it to school someday. Right now I ride the crowed and yucky bus.

     A farmer had a brother in town who was a gardener and had a garden full of the finest fruit trees. So his skill and his beautiful trees were famous everywhere. One day the farmer went into town to visit his brother,and was surprised at the trees that grew quite well.

     “Look,my brother ,” said the gardener. “I will give you an apple tree,the best from my garden,and you,and your children,and your children's children will enjoy it. ”

Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother's farm. They did so,and the next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it.
