5The underground train in Chengdu runs every three minutes during rush hours. (Raise a question according to the underlined part.)

_____________________________________________________________________

1would she

2Those stories were so difficult that I couldn’t understand them

3When were the ladies stroking pets informed of the bad news (by you)?

4Richard asked (me) if I had decided to join the evening class the day before.

5How often does the underground train run during rush hours?

When were the ladies stroking pets informed of the bad news?

Richard asked me if I had decided to join the evening class the day before.

How often does the underground train run during rush hours?

An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn’t walk steadily(平稳地). The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.

The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

The four-year-old son watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” The boy answered, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old son smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks(脸颊). Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times without success. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English... Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top from yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win them all.”

1The “spider story” mentioned in the passage is used to show that _________.

A. only failure can lead you to success

B. we can make it if we keep trying

C. failure is always terrible

D. people who fail have the same experience

2The underlined phrase “bear in mind” in the last paragraph means _________.

A. take care B. forget C. recognize D. remember

3The writer tells us to do all the things when dealing with failure except ________.

A. thinking about how it happened

B. believing that we can’t live happily if we fail

C. considering failure as a part of life

D. checking out whether our goals are right for the present situation

4The main idea of this passage is _________.

A. what the value of failure is

B. that Edison and Bruce failed repeatedly before success

C. what failure is and how to deal with failure

D. failure may be considered as a way towards success
