【题目】 It's dangerous to laugh when you are chewing gum (嚼口香糖) . You may choke (噎住) on the gum. This happened to Allyson Golden, a 12-year-old girl from the US. However, she was lucky because her friend Miriam Starobin saved her with something she learned from the cartoon Sponge Bob Squarepants (《海绵宝宝》).

The two girls were in music class. Their teacher said something funny and the students began to laugh hard. Suddenly, Golden choked as the gum got stuck in her throat.

Golden said it was the most terrible moment of her life. “Suddenly I couldn't laugh anymore. I couldn't breathe,” she said.

When Starobin saw Golden's face turn purple, she thought back to Sponge Bob. In one episode () of the show, Sponge Bob uses the Heimlich maneuver (海姆利克氏操作法) . In this maneuver, you push on the area below a person's chest (胸腔) to force air up his or her throat and stop them from choking. Starobin pulled Golden off the ground and did the Heimlich three or four times until the gum flew out from her mouth.

When she realized what her friend had done, Golden gave Starobin a big hug and said, “You just saved my life. I owe you big time.”

Their head teacher, Audrey Goropeuschek, is proud of her student. She said Starobin is a hero.

However, Starobin didn't think that she was a hero. “Heroes are people who even give their lives to save others,”she said. “I just did something that anyone could if they tried. ”

Speed reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and WeChat to try to grasp key words and the main meaning of a certain text. With so much information from our electronic devices(设备), it would be impossible if we read word by word, line by line.

But now people are called on to put down the devices and enjoy reading slowly. Slow readers, say a good reading habit makes their minds more active. What's more, slow reading gives them more peace. A study also shows that reading a novel helps people understand others better.

With the rapid development of technology, like screens, the way of reading is different from that traditional one. We use a wild skimming and skipping way as we look for important words. "We have become very good at collecting plenty of information, but we are also gradually forgetting deep reading and thinking."

Slow reading means a return to a continual, linear pattern(线性模式), in a quiet environment. "Aim for 30 minutes a day," advises Kelly from The Atlantic.
