【题目】 It is the year 1026, the time of the Song Dynasty. You are trained to become a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor. You are about to take your final exam. What kind of thing will you face?

During the Song Dynasty, doctors needed to show thy understood meridians (经络) — paths of energy running through the body.

If you were the one to take the exam, you would be asked to show how you would treat symptoms on a life-sized model covered in wax (). Under the wax, the model would be made of bronze (), filled with water, and covered in holes running along the meridian paths.

You would need to place an acupuncture needle (针灸用的针) into the correct part of a meridian to pass the exam. If you got it right, the needle would go straight through he hole, and water would pour out of the model. If you picked the wrong spot, the needle would hit the bronze model and you failed.

The exams wanted to make sure all young doctors knew how to treat patients hitting the same correct acupuncture points.

The first “bronze man” acupuncture model was made in 1026 by one of the great doctors named Wang Weiyi. Wang also wrote a book that was used across the country to teach how to use the model. Now you can see a copy of one of these bronze men in China’s National Museum.

【题目】 The older I get, the more I learn that our quality of life doesn’t depend on what we’ve been given. Instead, our quality of life depends on what we choose to create. Every day, we are creating our life. We are choosing how to spend our time, what words to say out loud, and how to care for ourselves. And with all these choices, we are creating our life.

Creating a good life requires you to choose how you spend your time well. You should be doing things that give you pleasure or satisfaction. But first, you have to find out what it is that you enjoy doing. For example, I enjoy reading, writing, and ballroom dancing. On days when I’m able to do at least one of those activities, I feel quite good. However, if my free time is taken up by serving other people’s interests, I feel frustrated. That is why you have to guard your free time. We all have parts of our day that are spent doing things that we have to do, such as our job or schoolwork. So, our limited free time is valuable indeed. But our free time is where we have the opportunity to create our life.

As a result, the questions you should be asking yourself every day are these: What kind of day am I creating today? Will I spend my time arguing with others and feeling frustrated? Or, will I do something with my time that I truly enjoy, such as reading a book or going dancing with my friends?

We have so many beautiful choices when it comes to spending our free time. The bottom line is this: We choose what kind of life we will live; how we choose to spend our free time is in our hands. Whether we spend our time with kind or unkind people is in our hands. And the choices that we make decide the kind of life that we live. This week, consider whether you’re making the right choices so that you can create a better life for yourself. Make sure you plan your free time carefully.
