【题目】Courtesy in English

Courtesy(礼貌) is an art form that shows our moral character. China's history is one of a civilization(文明) with a highly developed sense of etiquette(礼仪); therefore, we should speak English as politely as possible when we go abroad.

1Being polite when you ask for something is very important. Beginning your request with "May I...?""Could I...?" is considered polite. For example, "May I have a latte". It is also politer to say “I’ll have...” or “I’d like...” instead of “I want...”. Because it will be considered less direct.

2We should say “Excuse me” or “Do you mind if I ask you something?” We should not ask our questions directly. Instead, for example, we should say "Could you tell me where the restrooms are?"

3Local people in other communities sometimes speak really fast, so it can be hard for us to catch all the words. In such a situation, we can say "Pardon me?" to ask them to repeat what they said. In my opinion, saying "Can you please repeat that? I didn't follow" is the politest way.

4It is also important to know how to refuse someone's invitation. If we really can't make it, we can first say "I'd like to." and then say "but l have to work late" for example. Or "I’m afraid I can't" or even "That sounds great, but ...".

5We can use sentences like "I see what you're saying, but I think..."or "You could be right, but don't forget that..."or even "Yes, that's true, but I'm not sure that...".These are great ways to express disagreement politely by being less direct.

A.Refusing an invitation.

B."Please" and "thank you" go along way when we speak to each other.

C.Asking for help.

D.Ordering meals.

E.Expressing disagreement.

F.Can't catch what's been said?

【题目】 Many people have been making fun of Paris Hilton online recently. The 36-year-old US actress and model said on social media that she “invented” the selfie (自拍) in 2006, posting a photo of her and Britney Spears as “proof”. Internet users immediately proved her wrong, posting evidence (证据)of selfies that appeared much earlier in history.

In one example, a user posted a selfie that Buzz Aldrin, the famous astronaut, took a picture of himself in space in 1966. But perhaps the funniest example was a black-and-white selfie that was taken by American photographer Robert Cornelius in 1839. It is quite possibly the first selfie ever taken in history.

Why do people love to take selfies so much? Is it because we’re naturally vain (虚荣的) and proud? Maybe it’s actually the opposite--perhaps we feel insecure (没有安全感的) or shy. So we take photos of ourselves, post them online and wait for people to give us compliments (称赞).

Taking selfies can be dangerous, though. For example, if you take one while you’re on holiday and post it online, some thieves might see it and know that you aren’t home. They then might break into your home and steal your things while you’re away.

There are even people who have died while taking selfies. According to Forbes magazine, 127 people around the world died while taking selfies from 2014 to 2016. It can be very dangerous to take selfies while standing near high places, like roofs and cliffs (悬崖). Taking selfies underwater or on train tracks is also quite dangerous. So be careful out there if you decide to take some.

1The underlined word “proof” in Paragraph 1 means ________.

A.消息B.证据C.例子D.历史

2Which may be the earliest selfie, according to the story?

A.Paris Hilton and Britney Spears’ selfie.B.Buzz Aldrin’s selfie in space.

C.A color photo taken by an American scientist.D.A black-and-white photo of Robert Cornelius.

3What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.Paris Hilton is insecure and shy.B.Why people enjoy taking selfies.

C.Why people are naturally vain.D.Taking selfies is a good way to make friends.

4What can we learn from paragraphs 4 and 5?

A.Taking selfies can be dangerous.

B.There are no advantages to taking selfies.

C.Every year, 127 people die from taking selfies, on average.

D.Taking selfies near cliffs is more dangerous than underwater.

5If you are the writer, what will you write at the end of the passage?

A.Selfies have been around for longer than you think.

B.There is no need to take selfies near high places.

C.No selfie is worth risking your life for— no matter how good it might look.

D.People will lose their lives while taking selfies.

【题目】 We moved away from my grandmother when I was eight years old. I missed her a lot. I was her favourite granddaughter and she was my favourite grandma.

Two years later, my mother and father separated and soon divorced. I felt as if my world was falling apart. I lived with my mother for a time, next door to my grandma and grandpa in a house while my father was away during World War Ⅱ.

Grandma never had much in the way of money or material things. But it was the little things she gave me that let me feel warm, like letting me dip my fingers in the sugar bowl, letting me sip the coffee from her cup or allowing me to sit on the table as I had meals.

Though she didn’t have much, she did something for my brother and me. I will always remember she saved her coins in a glass jar. I thought my grandma could have used these coins herself, but she saved them to give us when we came to visit her.

I don’t remember how much we collected on our visits, nor was the amount important. It was the idea that she remembered us, and cared about us when we were away from her.
