【题目】 Earlier this year in Norway, people buried a steel bottle with plant seeds, a wristwatch and rock samples (样本) in it. Why did they do this? They were making a time capsule(时间胶囊).

Time capsules are small collections of goods or information that are stored somewhere safe. They can be opened by people many years later, giving future people a view of life in the past.

They may contain (包含) newspaper articles, popular music recordings, and photos. Historians can use time capsules to learn more about societies that lived in the past.

One of the earliest time capsules was the Detroit Century Box. On Dec 31st, 1900, the city picked several photos and letters to be placed in a box. The box was then locked until Dec 31st, 2000. The things inside the capsule give us a look at Detroit in the past. There were photos of people and places, as well as letters written by local people. Some of them even gave predictions for the future. One person predicted that Detroit would have a population of 4 million by 2000. But in fact, the city’s population was about 951,000 that year.

Humans have even sent time capsules into space! The US sent two capsules into space on the Voyager spacecraft (旅行者号航天器) in 1977. They are called the Voyager Golden Records. They contain sounds and pictures that show the diversity of human life and culture. For example, they have music by German composer (作曲家) Beethoven and pictures of plants, insects and landscapes (山水风景画). The Voyager spacecraft has traveled far away from our solar system(太阳系). It is hoped that aliens might find the time capsules someday and learn about us.

【题目】Courtesy in English

Courtesy(礼貌) is an art form that shows our moral character. China's history is one of a civilization(文明) with a highly developed sense of etiquette(礼仪); therefore, we should speak English as politely as possible when we go abroad.

1Being polite when you ask for something is very important. Beginning your request with "May I...?""Could I...?" is considered polite. For example, "May I have a latte". It is also politer to say “I’ll have...” or “I’d like...” instead of “I want...”. Because it will be considered less direct.

2We should say “Excuse me” or “Do you mind if I ask you something?” We should not ask our questions directly. Instead, for example, we should say "Could you tell me where the restrooms are?"

3Local people in other communities sometimes speak really fast, so it can be hard for us to catch all the words. In such a situation, we can say "Pardon me?" to ask them to repeat what they said. In my opinion, saying "Can you please repeat that? I didn't follow" is the politest way.

4It is also important to know how to refuse someone's invitation. If we really can't make it, we can first say "I'd like to." and then say "but l have to work late" for example. Or "I’m afraid I can't" or even "That sounds great, but ...".

5We can use sentences like "I see what you're saying, but I think..."or "You could be right, but don't forget that..."or even "Yes, that's true, but I'm not sure that...".These are great ways to express disagreement politely by being less direct.

A.Refusing an invitation.

B."Please" and "thank you" go along way when we speak to each other.

C.Asking for help.

D.Ordering meals.

E.Expressing disagreement.

F.Can't catch what's been said?

【题目】 For years, I fought with the “bird’s nest” on top of my head. My mother thought my hair was naturally beautiful, but my classmates didn’t agree. They made fun of it, calling my hair “the mop (拖把)”.

When I got to university, I decided to change my hairstyle. I had my curly (卷曲的) hair straightened (拉直). However, it cost me $700 once every six months to do this.
