When I was growing up,I had an old neighbor named Dr Gibbs. He didn’t look like any other doctor I’d ever known. He was a very kind person..After he retired,he began to plant trees in his large garden. He wished to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees.Once I asked why,he said,“If you water them, each baby tree will grow weaker and weaker. Otherwise, they will have to grow deep roots to look for water under the earth by themselves.”

He planted some oaks, and instead of watering them every morning,he beat them with a rolled-up newspaper.I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees’ attention.

Dr Gibbs died two years after I left home.I always walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant about twenty –five years ago. They’re very big and strong now.

I also planted two trees several years ago.I carried water to them for a whole summer.I sprayed(喷洒)them. However, after two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.

Life is hard, whether we want it to be or not. What we need to do is try our best to make our roots reach deep into the brave heart,so when the rain falls and the wind blows,we could face them strongly and won’t be beaten down.

Dear Sally,

Thank you for your e-mail and the photo of New York. Here are some photos of my family trip in Wuhan. In the first photo, my sister Jane is wearing Chinese traditional clothes on the Yellow Grower. In the second picture, my father and I are swimming in a river. It’s so cool! In the next picture, my parents, Jane and I are eating great noodles. Its name is hot dry noodles. It looks very nice!

In the last picture, my family people are at my friend’s home. We are having some mooncakes because it’s the Mid-autumn Festival. It’s an important festival in China. On this day, all the families get together and have a happy dinner.

I think Wuhan is a nice city in China. The people there are friendly. One day I wish to go there again.

Yours,

David

When someone says, “I guess I′ll have to face the music”, it doesn′t mean he is going to a concert. It is something unhappy. For example, a student is called in by his teacher to explain why he didn′t finish his homework.

Every American, young or old, knows the phrase “to face the music” well. It′s at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from?

One explanation (解释) is about the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. He said the expression was first used by actors. When they were asked to perform, they would say, “It′s time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did-face the band which is just below the stage (舞台).

An actor might be nervous when he moved onto the stage in front of the audience (观众). But he had to go out. So, “to face the music” came to mean having to go through something no matter how unhappy it might be, because you had no choice.

The other explanation comes from the army. The soldiers had to face their leader′s check. They were worried about how well they looked. Were their guns clean enough to pass the check? Still, the men had to go out to face the check. What else could they do?

1.What does the expression “to face the music” exactly mean?

A. To go to a concert.

B. To become interested in music.

C. To join the army.

D. To go through something unhappy.

2.In which of the following places won′t the expression “to face the music” be

used?

A. The stage. B. The school. C. The city library. D. The army.

3.What′s the main idea of the fourth paragraph?

A. Worries of an actor on the stage.

B. Different kinds of audience.

C. Why an actor is nervous on the stage.

D. The true meaning of “to face the music”.

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Here are two explanations about the expression “to face the music”.

B. The music in “to face the music” is a kind of terrible music.

C. When you face the music, it means that you must go through it.

D. When someone says he has to face the music, he will have no choice.
