【题目】 Tom walked away from the school. He would never return. He was a lonely boy. Nobody loved him. He met his best friend, Joe Harper. Joe’s mother had beaten him. But Joe hadn’t done anything wrong. He also wanted to leave home. The two boys began to make plans. They both agreed to become pirates (海盗).

Five kilometers south of St Petersburg was an island called Jackson’s island. It was close to the other shore of the river. They decided to go there. Tom arrived with a boiled ham and a corn, Joe had some bacon, and Huck had a frying pan, all stolen from home or their neighbors. They took some fire from an empty boat, and then they set off on the raft (木筏). At about 2 a.m. they landed on Jackson’s Island, and carried their only possessions onto the shore. They decided to sleep in the open air. That was what pirates did.

They built a fire, cooked some bacon for supper, and ate half of the corn they had brought. It seemed wonderful to be eating in the wild forest of an undiscovered island. They said they would never go back.

“It’s just the life for me,” said Tom, “You don’t have to get up in the mornings and go to school, and wash all those foolish things. A pirate doesn’t have to do anything.”

【题目】 Millions of people visit Machu Picchu each year. It is an ancient Inca city in the mountains of Peru. Steep(陡峭的) steps and rough paths make the trip a challenge. It used to be nearly impossible for people with a physical disability.

Wheel the World has changed that. The company offers wheel-chair- accessible(可以使用轮椅的) tours of Machu Picchu and other places around the world. “Normally people with disabilities would think that these kinds of places are not possible for them,” Camilo Navarro told reporters. He set up Wheel the World with his best friend, Alvaro Silberstein. Silberstein uses a wheel chair.

Navarro and Silberstein started Wheel the World after hiking Torres del Paine in 2016. It is a national park in Chile. Silberstein was the first person to travel the park in a wheelchair. “Our story went popular,” he says. “We started receiving hundreds of requests from people wanting to repeat this trip.”

Today, Wheel the World runs 40 wheelchair-accessible trips in 55 countries. The company offers cars and hotels with ramps(轮椅). It directs people to accessible(可进入的) bathrooms. It even teaches local guides to help wheelchair users get around.

Wheel the World uses a special wheelchair for the Machu Picchu trip. It can be pushed like a wheelbarrow(独轮车). It also folds up(折叠) and can be put into a car easily. “It's a super strong wheelchair. It allows you to get to every corner in all kinds of places,” Navarro says. “Wherever somebody with a disability want to go, we can get there with that wheelchair.”

Wheel the World hopes to give people with disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else. “The world hasn't been planned for people with a disability,” Navarro says. “It's important to build a fairer and better world.”

【题目】 Have you ever stayed deep underground in a cave? You have no food and the oxygen(氧气) is running out. You're not even sure if anyone knows you're down there.

A soccer team of 12 young Thai boys, as well as their coach, had to go through this experience this summer. They became trapped in a cave in Thailand on June 23, spending 18 days inside until they were saved by an international team of divers(潜水员）. After hearing the news that a former Thai Navy SEAL(海军海豹突击队员）died while trying to save these kids, my friends and I talked about the situation and felt as if there might be no way to get the children out.

But we held out hope anyway. We refused to give up hope for these kids, even when the situation seemed quite dark. We were rewarded(奖励)for our hope when they were finally saved.

It can be hard to hold out hope in dark times. Every day, we read or hear about the terrible things that happen in the world. This makes it hard for us to stay positive. Some people go through their lives thinking that the worst is always just around the corner.

However, I believe that it's especially important to stay positive during difficult times. This is the best way to deal with the challenges that we face in life. As people often say: there is always a light at the end of the tunnel(隧道).
