题目内容

When you wave to a friend, you are using body language. When you smile at someone you mean to be friendly. When you put one finger in front of your mouth, you mean “be quiet”. Yet, people in different countries may use different body languages.

Once an Englishman was in Italy. He could speak little Italian. One day while he was walking in the street, he felt hungry and went into a restaurant. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers into it and took them out again and moved his lips. In this way, he meant to say, “Bring me something to eat.” But the waiter brought him a lot of things to drink, first tea, then coffee and then milk, but no food.

The Englishman was sorry because he was not able to tell the waiter he was hungry. He was ready to leave the restaurant when another man came in. The man put his hands on his stomach, and this body language was good enough for the waiter. In a few minutes, the waiter brought him a large plate of bread and meat.

Finally the Englishman had his meal in the same way.

More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains; some traveled into unknown parts of the world. Some sailed small boats across the largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement.

Bungee jumping(蹦极) and motorcycle racing are quite dangerous sports. Bungee jumping only lasts for a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, about 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡胶带子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.

Why do people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.

Many people think that there is little excitement in life. They live and work in safe places, buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.

The clockwork(机械) radio is the only radio that doesn’t need batteries(电池) or electricity. It is powered(提供动力) by turning the handle(手柄) for a minute.

The clockwork radio was invented in 1991 by Trevor Bayliss, a British inventor. Trevor had the idea while he was listening to some news about Africa on the radio. It was reported that Africans were dying of Aids(艾滋病) and there was no easy way to send them some information about the disease.

But no one would help Trevor develop his idea for a new kind of radio. Finally, in 1993, a TV program showed his invention, and afterwards, a South African businessman heard of Trevor’s clever idea and contacted(联系) him.The first clockwork radios were made in South Africa in 1995.

Since then, the radios have been a great success. Trevor has been given many prizes.

“I want this report before Sunday! Your deadline!” Robin, my boss, shouted at me as usual. On a Friday evening, that meant my weekend plans would be destroyed.

I was disappointed and upset. I couldn’t go on with my work. I decided to leave for the day and come early to work on Saturday morning. What was worse, I couldn’t get my car going. So I decided to take a taxi. As I got close to the road, I became more disappointed. Why always me? I had no reason to smile or be happy.

While I was waiting, I saw a little girl in a dirty and dusty shirt under a tiny roof(屋檐) nearby. Her hair looked untidy. She was playing with a puppy on her lap. Puppy was a street dog just like the girl. Both of them appeared happy with each other.

I had not thought about my office, my disappointment and my unhappiness even for a moment since watching this little girl. She had nothing that I had. However, she had what I lacked(缺乏)—the spirit to be happy and the ability to find a reason to smile.

She had unknowingly taught me a priceless lesson. Happiness does not depend on what you have; it depends on what you think of what you have. If she could smile in the situation she was in, who was stopping me? Me, myself!

1.When was the writer asked to hand in the report?

2.How did the writer feel when he came to his desk?

3.What was the girl doing when the writer saw her?
