题目内容

“I want this report before Sunday! Your deadline!” Robin, my boss, shouted at me as usual. On a Friday evening, that meant my weekend plans would be destroyed.

I was disappointed and upset. I couldn’t go on with my work. I decided to leave for the day and come early to work on Saturday morning. What was worse, I couldn’t get my car going. So I decided to take a taxi. As I got close to the road, I became more disappointed. Why always me? I had no reason to smile or be happy.

While I was waiting, I saw a little girl in a dirty and dusty shirt under a tiny roof(屋檐) nearby. Her hair looked untidy. She was playing with a puppy on her lap. Puppy was a street dog just like the girl. Both of them appeared happy with each other.

I had not thought about my office, my disappointment and my unhappiness even for a moment since watching this little girl. She had nothing that I had. However, she had what I lacked(缺乏)—the spirit to be happy and the ability to find a reason to smile.

She had unknowingly taught me a priceless lesson. Happiness does not depend on what you have; it depends on what you think of what you have. If she could smile in the situation she was in, who was stopping me? Me, myself!

My mom is a nurse, and she works in a hospital. She works a lot, and usually at night. She doesn’t have enough time to do the housework, so my dad often helps her and he likes it. My dad works in a bank. He arrives home at about 4 p.m., so he can do a lot of things at home.

Every evening Dad cooks dinner. My brother and I help him. After dinner Dad does the dishes and I help him dry them. Then we take a shower and Dad reads us short stories.

On Saturday, we clean the house. I clean the furniture (家具) and Dad sweeps the floor. Tom takes the rubbish out and waters the plants. Dad likes cleaning the windows but he hates ironing (熨). He never does it. My grandma comes to us twice a week and she irons our clothes.

When you wave to a friend, you are using body language. When you smile at someone you mean to be friendly. When you put one finger in front of your mouth, you mean “be quiet”. Yet, people in different countries may use different body languages.

Once an Englishman was in Italy. He could speak little Italian. One day while he was walking in the street, he felt hungry and went into a restaurant. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers into it and took them out again and moved his lips. In this way, he meant to say, “Bring me something to eat.” But the waiter brought him a lot of things to drink, first tea, then coffee and then milk, but no food.

The Englishman was sorry because he was not able to tell the waiter he was hungry. He was ready to leave the restaurant when another man came in. The man put his hands on his stomach, and this body language was good enough for the waiter. In a few minutes, the waiter brought him a large plate of bread and meat.

Finally the Englishman had his meal in the same way.

Google and Toyota(丰田)have worked together to create a new smart car. It can run on the road without a driver. It drives itself.

The self-driving(自驾的)car hasn’t been on sale to the public, so we don’t know how much it costs. Another thing that most people want to know is whether it will be safe enough to run on the road.

The self-driving car uses electricity as its power, and it can’t drive very quickly—the top speed would be 25 miles per hour. It is actually controlled by a computer system in the car. The system keeps on collecting information by some video cameras inside the car. A computer receives the information and decides what to do.

“The self-driving car has only buttons (按钮) for go and stop, so it’s very easy to use.” an engineer of Google says, “It will make car accidents less and the world safer.” The self-driving car has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles in California, and it has only gotten into two accidents by human mistake.

2.What does self-driving car use as its power?
