People around the world need to get moving, according to a new study by the World Health Organization (WHO).

About 25 percent of adults worldwide do not get enough exercise, according to the study. 1 Because of this, about 1.4 billion people are at greater risk for deadly diseases such as heart disease and cancer. According to the WHO, people should do at least 150 minutes of light exercise each week, such as dancing or swimming. 2

When it comes to exercising more, experts say that we don’t have to go to the gym every time. 3 Standing on one leg for 30 seconds each day is also good for our health.

4 Thirty-two percent of women fail to exercise enough, compared to twenty-two percent of men. Women tend to spend more time at home taking care of children and doing housework.

Countries with higher incomes showed higher rates of inactivity. For example, people in Kuwait and the United States exercise less than people in Uganda and Nepal. Does China exercise? 5 The study says that 14 percent of Chinese adults don’t exercise enough, much lower than the average rate — 26 percent — of other middle-income nations.

A. This number hasn’t changed since 2001.

B. In the study, China is listed as a middle-income country.

C. The study also found that women are less active than men.

D. For example, we can take the stairs instead of taking an elevator.

E. They can also do 75 minutes of heavy exercise, such as running or playing soccer.

1根据上文“About 25 percent of adults worldwide do not get enough exercise, according to the study.”可知,根据这项研究,全世界约有25% 的成年人没有得到足够的锻炼;根据下文“Because of this, about 1.4 billion people are at greater risk for deadly diseases such as heart disease and cancer.” 故选A

2根据上文“According to the WHO, people should do at least 150 minutes of light exercise each week, such as dancing or swimming.” 此处是在举例说明人们每天应该参加的锻炼项目和时间,所以此处填“They can also do 75 minutes of heavy exercise, such as running or playing soccer.”

3根据“When it comes to exercising more, experts say that we don’t have to go to the gym every time.”可知,说到多锻炼,专家说我们不必每次都去健身房;根据下文“Standing on one leg for 30 seconds each day is also good for our health.”可知,每天单腿站立30秒对我们的健康也有好处,此处是举例说明不去健身房的运动方式,所以此处应填“For example, we can take the stairs instead of taking an elevator.”

4根据下文“Thirty-two percent of women fail to exercise enough, compared to twenty-two percent of men.”可知,32% 的女性缺乏足够的锻炼,而男性只有22% 缺乏足够锻炼,此处是说明女性不如男性活跃,所以此处应填“The study also found that women are less active than men.”

5根据下文“The study says that 14 percent of Chinese adults don’t exercise enough, much lower than the average rate — 26 percent — of other middle-income nations.” “In the study, China is listed as a middle-income country.”
