A new family recently had moved into our small town, and Pam was spending more and more time at their house. I felt ______ and left out.

When my mother asked me whether I would take a May Day basket to Pam’s house, I answered angrily, “Of course not!” My mother stopped what she was doing and ______ me in her arms. She told me that I would have many other friends in my lifetime.
