Mr. and Mrs. Miller lived with a pet dog, Rita. They started a sailing trip with Rita last November. On the seventh day of the trip, Mr. and Mrs. Miller were having a wonderful time when a storm(暴风雨) suddenly came. While the Millers were trying hard to keep the boat out of danger, they forgot about Rita. A moment later, they found Rita was lost. The couple were worried if she had died in the water. “Because it was a cloudy day, we just couldn’t find her even though we searched carefully for over an hour,” Mrs. Miller told BBC News. “We thought that if she fell into the water, she would be gone because of the big waves.”

Mr. and Mrs. Miller kept sad on their way home because they lost their favorite pet. But four months later, they received some surprising news — Rita had been found on an island. After falling off the boat, she had swam five miles to the island. And she lived by eating small animals there.

The people on the island first thought that she was a wild dog because she did not let people come close to her. However, when Mr. and Mrs. Miller came to pick her up, Rita knew who they were at once. “After I called her name, she jumped up and almost knocked me down,” Mrs. Miller said.

Rita’s terrible experience was finally over. She is all right at home now, relaxing by the pool. But Mrs. Miller is still not sure what her dog went through.

Rita was just a common house dog. She swam over five miles and lived successfully on her own.
