7、Washoe is a young chimpanzee (黑猩猩). She is no   1   chimpanzee, though. Scientists are doing research   2   her. They want to see how civilized (驯化) she can   3  . Already she can do many things a human being does.

For example, she has been learning how to exchange   4   with people. The scientists are teaching her   5   language. When she wants to be picked   6  , Washoe points up with one finger. She rubs her teeth with her finger   7   she wants to brush her teeth. This is done after every meal.

Washoe has also been   8   to find answers to problems. Once she was in a   9   with food hanging from the ceiling. It was too high to   10  . After she considered the   11  , she got a tall box to   12  . The food was still too high to be reached. Washoe found a   13   pole. Then she climbed onto the   14  , grasped (抓取) the pole, and   15   down the food with the pole.

Washoe   16   like a human, too. The scientists keep her in a fully furnished house. After a hard   17   in the lab, she goes home.  18   she plays with her toys. She   19   enjoys watching television before going to bed.

Scientists hope to   20   more about people by studying our closest relative – the chimpanzee.

6、    I grew up in a small town. My father raised chickens and ran a construction company. I was barely 10 years old when my dad gave me the responsibility (责任) of feeding the chickens and cleaning up the stable. He believed it was important for me to have those jobs to learn responsibility. Then, when I was 22, I found a job in Natchbill at a country music club called the Natchbill Palace. I washed dishes and cooked from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and then went on stage and sang until 2:00 in the morning. It wasn’t long before I became known as a singing cook. I had been rejected so many times by record companies that it was hard not to be discouraged. One night, a woman executive (董事) from a company named Warner Brothers Records came to hear me sing. When the show was over, we sat down and talked and after she left, I said to myself it was one more rejection. A few weeks later, my manager received a phone call – Warner Brothers wanted to sign me to a record deal. Soon after, I released my first record in June 1986. It sold over 2 million copies. My best efforts had gone into every job I’ve ever held. It was the sense of responsibility that made me feel like a man. Knowing that I had done my best filled me with pride, I still feel that way today, even though I have become a well – known signer.

4、How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.

First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering (给人以权力的) things they can do. Perhaps what most separate successful people from others is that they live life “on purpose” – they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do – and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment (投身,献身). To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals.

Rather than seeing it negative or depressing they use the knowledge to spur themselves on and go after what they want energetically and passionately.

3、Part of David’s heart muscle grew thick and stiff, keeping the flow of blood. The disease David had lived with for 17 years was slowly keeping his heart from beating.

The night Flora bent forward in front of her computer, everybody else was asleep. for the price, or keeping her husband alive? To do that, she needed to search for the information: a place and someone to fix David’s damaged heart. And she needed to be lucky.

Finally, she found what she needed on a magazine’s web site. When David came into the study early the following morning, she said, “I’ve found it.” and handed him the papers.

David wondered if there was any other way. Then he thought about his wife and kids. He stared at the papers. Only he could make a choice: Should he have the same surgery (外科手术) that had killed his father, or the one that no one works? This experimental treatment might be his best hope.

The operation theatre was kept freezing cold. David wasn’t frightened, just nervous.

He felt a burning pain, like a burning knife cutting through his heart…

On the EKG screen, the tiny valley in the middle of each peak (高峰) —showing a sign of David’s disease—smoothed out. For the first time in years, he had a normal arterial (动脉) pressure.

“That’s the most unusual thing,” said Flora, excited by the results.

Three days later, David and Flora drove home after the fight from Houston. Their kids ran out to meet them.
