第二节 完型填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to go to face the music.” It doesn’t mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is 26 less pleasant, like 27__ in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this 28 that. Terrible music, indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or 29 , every one of us has had to “face the music”, especially as children. We can all remember father’s 30 voice, “I want to talk to you!” And only 31 we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it 32 ! The phrase “to face the music” is known 33 every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the 34 come from? The first explanation comes from American novelist James Fennimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, 35 the expression was first 36 by actors while _ 37_ in the wings(舞台侧面) to go on stage. After they got their clue to go on, they often said, “It’s time to go to face the music.” And this is exactly what they did face - the orchestra (管弦乐队) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or 38 as he moved on to the stage in front of him. The audience might be friendly, or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So, “to face the music” 39 to mean: having to go 40 with something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.
