Dear Mr Heimer,
Thank you for the fine arrangements that were made for me last
December. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your hotel. I plan to
visit Hawaii again this December. I will arrive on the morning of December 7
and hope that a room can be used from noon. I will leave on the morning of
December 12. I would very much appreciate it if you could arrange for a
ground-level oceanfront room.
Thank you again for everything you have done to make my previous stays
memorable.
Sincerely yours,
Wang Gang

Text 1
W: Hello, Mike! How are you?
M: Oh, it's you, Mary! I'm fine. I could
hardly recognize you. You remain the same as you did 5 years ago!
W: Oh, really? Thank you.
Text 2
W: Who left the window open yesterday? Who
left the office last yesterday?
M: Nobody left the window open yesterday. I
opened it just now. It's too hot in this room.
W: It' s a bit cooler in the early morning.
We shall have another hot day!
Text 3
W: Why don' t you go to your office today?
M: I am on holiday. I shall have another
seven days off. I don't know where to go for my holiday.
W: Why not come to my' house with your
family tomorrow so that we can have a chat?
Text 4
W: Is there any train to Beijing this
afternoon?
M: Yes, there is one. It leaves at half past
two in the afternoon.
W: Well. Give me two tickets. Here is the
money.
Text 5
W: Can I help you with the suitcase?
M: No, I can manage it myself. But thank
you all the same.
Text 6
M: Hi, Judy. How about helping me carry
some of these books back to the house, can you? If I try and do it myself, I think
I'll break my arms.
W: Wow, where did you get so many books --
rob a library? Oh no, don't tell me you are going to open a bookstore.
M: Very funny. I was at the bookstore the
whole day. After Christmas many books that were not popular were on sale. And I
picked up .so many really interesting ones. Take a look.
W: "Speaking Chinese","
Introduction to Asia"," Arts and Culture". Are you planning to
get a job in Asia?
M: Well, they are interesting and I bought
these honks because they were worth the money. I couldn't afford them if they were
new. If you help me carry them I' II let you have one.
W: I'd certainly like to pick one. Now, let
me help you.

Some clinics and hospitals in England use computers now. The
computers there are often called robot doctors, they are good assistants to
human doctors. The hospital computers work in this way. They show each question
on TV. Then the patient pushes one of the three buttons: Yes, No, or I don't
understand. Dr Robot can ask his patient many questions. The information helps
the human doctor a lot when he meets the patient. Most patients like the metal
"doctor". Some patients even prefer it. They can answer very personal
problems more comfortably.
Text 8
Art is sometimes divided
into two kinds, high art and popular art. Popular art has got more lovers than
high art. People who enjoy high art go to the opera and concerts; they keep up
with the art exhibitions at museums and galleries. Popular art is the main way
for people to enjoy themselves. Some TV programs are meant to be watched today
and forgotten tomorrow. Many popular rungs are loved for a short time and then
disappear. Other songs remain popular for such a long time and they become
classics. The line between high and popular art is not always clear, however.
For example, many people believe that rock music is a real 'art form while
others don't.
Text 9
W: I met Betty today on the street.
M: How is she doing?
W: She told me that she just got back with
John from a trip to Mexico.
M: They did? So what did she say about
Mexico?
W: Oh, they had a lovely time. She said
we'd really enjoy it if we were there too.
M: Did you ask how the weather was?
W: It seems it was rather cool in Mexico
City, but nice and warm along the coast.
M: Did she say where she stayed?
W: She told me, but l don't remember.
M: Well, did she say the hotels were
crowded'?
W: Yes, she said they were. They always are
at this time of year. So she recommends we make our plans as soon as possible.
M: Well, we'd better do some checking. Do
you still have that guide book?
W: Yes, here it is. If I remember, it says
the cheapest is around 35 dollars a day.
Text 10
W: Oh, hi Dave. Long time, no see!
M: Hi Maria. I was in the neighborhood, so
I thought I'd drop by.
W: Come on in. Would you like anything to
drink? Sprite or orange juice?
M: Sprite would be fine.
W: Uh, so how have you been?
M: Oh, I'm doing okay, but school has been
really hectic these days, and I haven't had time to relax.
W: By the way, what's your major anyway?
M: Hotel management.
W: Well, what do you want to do once you
graduate?
M: Uh... I haven' t decided for sure, but I
think I' d like to work for a hotel or travel agency in this area. How about
you ?
W: Well, when I first started college, I
wanted to major in French, but I realized I might have a hard time finding a job
using the language, so I changed majors to computer science. With the right
skills, landing a job in computer industry shouldn't be as difficult.
M: So, do you have a part-time job to
support yourself through school?
W: Well, fortunately for me, I received a
four-year academic scholarship that pays for all of my tuition and books.
M: Wow. That' s great.
