W:The show starts at 7:10, so why don’t we leave at 6:00?
M:Will there be enough time to get there? It’ll be rush hour so the traffic could be bad.
W: OK. If we leave at 5:30, we’ll have much more time.

W:Are you traveling alone, Mike?
M:No, I’ll take my family abroad this time. My wife and our three children are all going with me .

W:Did you get some gas for the car?
M:Oh, I forgot. We’d better get some on our way back. Shall we get something to eat now?
W:I’m not hungry now. Let’s go for a mid-night dinner after the play.

W:Hey, Jack. How was your weekend?
M:Not bad. I went downtown to watch a film with my roommate.
W:How was it?
M:Oh, it was wonderful, but my companion wasn’t.
W:What do you mean?
M:Well, I like the film, but my roommate talked about this and that, and he thought the Titanic was some boat the Japanese sank during World War II.
W:Oh, not a very bright man.

W:Dr Carter’s office?
M:Yes. I’d like to make an appointment to see Dr Carter, please.
W:Ok. Could I have your name, please?
M:Yes, My name is Ronald Schuler.
W:Ronald Schuller. Ok. How about the day after tomorrow on Wednesday at 4:00 P.M.?
M:Do you happen to have an opening this morning?
W:Um… how about tomorrow at 8:00 A.M. or Thursday at 8:15 A.M.?
M:Uh, do you have anything earlier?
W:No. I’m sorry.
M:Well, in that case, tomorrow would be fine.
W:What’s the purpose of your visit?
M:Well, to tell the truth, I fell from a ladder two days ago while painting my house and my foot landed in a paint can and it was badly hurt.
W:So you took off the paint can? Sir, sir, are you still there?
M:Well, the paint can is still on my foot.
W:Oh, please come now. I don’t thinking your case can wait.

M:Oh, dear, I suppose it’s time to start thinking about the summer holidays again. The papers are full of travel articles.
W:They always are at this time of year. Have you got somewhere already in mind?
M:I just think it would be nice to go somewhere different, for example, Tibet.
W:Where? Tibet? But it’s quite far away. It will cost a lot.
M:But you know I’d like to go somewhere out-of-the-way. Somewhere there aren’t many tourists. I haven’t been to Tibet, but some people I know tell me it’s a wonderful place for a holiday.
W:You might have trouble with the food and water.
M: Never mind, I can get some information from the travel agency and see what they offer. Are you coming with me?
W:I’d be quite happy to stay at home and work in the garden. You know I want to make a path.

W:Hi, Dave. Good to see you could come a long way. Come on in.
M:Wow. Looks like the party is at a high point.
W:Yeah. And they’re eating all of my food. Oh, I’d like you to meet my sister, Cariol. She’s visiting for the weekend.
M:Oh, which one is she?
W:She’s sitting on the sofa over there.
M:You mean the woman with long black hair?
W:That’s right. Let me introduce her to you. You’re both so friendly.
M:And who’s the man sitting next to her? Uh, the man wearing the suit jacket?
W:Oh, that’s Bob, my ballet teacher.
M:Ballet teacher! I never knew you were into ballet.
W:I started about two months ago. Come on. I’d like you to meet them.
M:I’m coming.
Text 10
As the car industry develops, traffic accidents have become as familiar as the common cold. Yet, their cause and control remain a serious problem that is difficult to solve. Experts have long recognize that this discouraging problem has various cause. At the very least, it is a problem that involves three factors: the driver, the vehicle, and the roadway. If all drivers exercise good judgment at all times, there would be few accidents. But that is rather like saying that if all people were honest, there would be no crime. Improved design has helped make highways much safer. But the type of accidents continued to rise because of human failure and a large increase in the numbers of automobiles on the road. Attention is now turning increasingly to the third factor of the accident, the car itself. Since people believe the accidents are bound to occur, they want to know how cars ban be built better to protect the drivers.
