Rabbi Sternberg taught me valuable lessons that had nothing to do with the curriculum (课程). In his class, I watched my classmates throw food around the room and not pay attention, 16 they weren’t being monitored by the old man. His patience during these episodes (插曲) was not 17 .

I stayed after class that day, and asked him how he could 18 what had gone on. His 19 shocked me. He said, “Aryeh, I 20 what people do. I think if they want to stop because they feel they are being 21 , they should do so of their own will.” I saw the 22 in his aged eyes.

He taught law. The book of law was not what 23 me to the class. It was the person teaching it, who had a(n) 24 understanding of people. One day we were discussing whether money, if 25 , must be returned to its owner. “Some people would keep this money 26 others would return it,” said my teacher. “It is very common that someone actually 27 it for the sake of being praised. That person is good, but not 28 . A great person does this deed for the sake of being a good person, not for the 29 .”

For the next few weeks, I tried to live as though I were being 30 by Rabbi Sternberg. I did people favors. Even I 31 to find someone’s lost bag, and when I returned it, did not speak of any extra 32 . I was 33 by this man to become a better person.

Rabbi Sternberg told me I was 34 my name, Aryeh, which means lion, king of the jungle. He told me that by being a(n) 35 to my classmates, it was as though I were a king leading his nation.
