One possible version:

Recently there has been a heated discussion in our class about whether we should use traditional characters instead of simplified characters.

Opinions are divided into two groups. Some students think traditional characters should be used in our daily life because it will help us know more about the origin of Chinese culture. They also think traditional characters were created according to a strict set of rules, so they look more beautiful.

However, the others hold different opinions. They think traditional characters are difficult to learn and write, which brings inconvenience to people. More importantly, they believe it will be a barrier to promoting Chinese culture to the world.

In my opinion, people have been used to simplified characters. It will not be a good idea to change them into a more complicated form. But people should learn more about traditional characters and be able to recognize them in some particular occasions.

第二节 开放作文(15分)

One possible version:

In the picture we can see a family in a car, The mother and the father are trying to drive it in opposite directions with their child sitting between them, looking rather confused.

It reminds me of a common phenomenon in some families. When there are some decisions for the family to make, the parents hold different opinions and turn a deaf ear to each other, not to mention the child’s ideas. For example, when it comes to what their child should major in at university, they will have a heated argument regardless of the child’s intention.

I think parents should try to improve their communication and take their children’s opinions into consideration so as to reach an agreement.

W:Sir, you’ve been using the Online Catalogue for quite a while; is there anything I can help you find?

M:I’ve got to write a paper about Hollywood in the 30s and 40s, and I’m really struggling. There are hundreds of books, and I just don’t know where to begin.

W:Your topic sounds pretty big.Why don’t you narrow it down to something like…uh…the history of the studios during that time ?

M:You know.I was thinking about doing that, but more than 30 books came up when I typed in “movie studios.”

W:You could cut that down even further by listing the specific years you want.Try adding “1930s” or “1940s” or maybe “Golden Age.”

M:”Golden Age” is a good idea.Let me type that in…Hey, look, just 6 books came up that time. That’s a lot better.

W:Oh…another thing you might consider…have you tried looking for any magazine or newspaper articles?

M:No, I’ve only been searching for books.

W:$50! That’s quite dear.I can’t afford that.

M:Remember these are hand painted pieces of pottery; that kind of work doesn’t come cheaply.

M:Listen, I can see that you are in love with that plate.Let’s just make it $45.I’d really like you to take that home with you.

W:How about $35? I really can’t go any higher than that.
