Modern Farms in the U.S.

Let’s take a look at a farm, which is owned by Don and Betty Owen in Wisconsin (威斯康星州). Life on the Owens’ farm is very different from farm life as many city people might imagine it. Good roads and a car mean that they can get to town, do their shopping and be back home in a short time. They keep in touch with the news by radio, newspaper and television. With the telephone they can talk to their neighbors and friends whenever they like.

The Owens’ dairy farm (乳牛场) is one of the finest to be found anywhere. Don milks about fifty cows with only part-time help to get the milking machines on and off the cows and to care for the milk later. The cows are kept in a large place where there is an automatic feeder, which saves Don several hours a day.

Their kitchen is as modern as those in the city so that the work can be done in less time.

With all the help from machines, farming still requires hard work and long hours. Betty and Don are up at 5: 30 each morning and seldom(很少)stop working before late in the evening. But the Owens like their life on the farm.

Summer Holidays in England

　　　 With July come examinations. When these exams finish, the summer holidays begin. Boys and girls will have two months to rest.

　　　 The summer holidays are the best part of the year for most children. The weather is usually good, so that they can spend most of their time in swimming, camping(野营)or traveling with their parents.

　　　 Of course, the most enjoyable place is the seaside. Some children are lucky enough to live near the sea. They enjoy exceptional (得天独厚的) advantages. As for those who live far from the sea, their parents will also take them to the seaside for the holidays, for they know that a week or two at a seaside town during summer holidays is their children’s eager(渴望的) hope. In England not only the rich, but also factory workers or bus drivers can take their children to seaside for their holidays. In fact during the August Holidays most towns are almost empty.

　　　 Why do children like spending their summer holidays at the seaside? It is because they like the sand, the sun, the cool wind and the salty water there more than anything else. Of course there are many new things to see, nice things to eat, and exciting things to do, but it is the feeling of sand under one’s feet, of cool wind and salt water on one’s skin, and of the warm sun on one’s back that make the seaside what it is.
