The Chinese national flag is known all over the world,
but its story is not very well known. In 1949, a competition was held to find a
new flag for China.
People were invited to send their ideas to the newspapers. Many people took
part. More than 3,000 ideas were invented. These ideas were looked at many
times by a group of important people. In the end, only thirty-eight were
chosen.
Zeng Liansong’s flag was one of the best thirty eight.
On his flag, he put the four small stars on one side of the large star. When it
was shown to Mao Zedong, he liked it very much.
That is how the red flag with five yellow stars became
the flag of the People’s Republic of China.
