The diamond is the hardest natural substance in the world. What causes this superhardness? Pressure and heat are the answers. The pressure has to be close to two million pounds. That’s per square inch. Much heat is required too. Experts say over 5,000 degrees. To make a diamond, one more thing is needed. This is ______. Pressure, heat, and carbon combine. They create a sparkling diamond. The very best are colorless. Pale blue stones─very rare─are high quality too.
Where do most diamonds come from? Over 97 percent come from Africa. The first diamond in Africa was not found by miners. Children found it, in 1866. They were playing in a shallow stream. One picked up “a pretty pebble”. The “pebble” was placed on the mantel of the fireplace. It was soon forgotten. Much later, a guest noticed the sparkle. He urged the farmer to have the stone looked at. He did. He took it to an expert in town. The “pebble” proved to be a diamond worth $2,500. That was a small fortune in those days. To date, the mines in Africa have produced over 1 billion dollars worth of diamonds.
Not all diamonds are found in Africa. Our hemisphere produced diamonds too. Brazil was a big producer in earlier times. The famous gem the Star of the South was found in brazil in 1853.
The gem the President Vargas was found more recently in Brazil. This was in 1938. A poor prospector found the stone. It was in the San Antonio River. It weighed 726.6 carats. The man sold the stone for $10,000 to a local broker. The broker almost immediately resold it. He got about $425,000. What a nice guy!

查看习题详情和答案>>In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most
people like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is
about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied
trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in
personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a
bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years,
the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers
has increased,it is still very small now. In countries such as France,Germany,or Japan, more people
use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly,Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains.
These highways connect all major cities in America. Secondly, many travelers like to be independent.
When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between
major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, trave
l from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over
long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to
fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing.

In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.
First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice.I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.
I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor.I was paid the lowest wage of that time-two dollars an hour.Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible.I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.
But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions.During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.
I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked.By the time I left, I _________.

Two pieces of foreign news caught people’s attention. In the US, 18-year-old Michael Sessions won the mayoral(市长的)election in his town, to become the youngest mayor in the US. A similar thing happened in Britain. Martin Halstead, a high school graduate at 19, set up his own airline company.
Chinese teens admire their skills in getting such important posts. But have you ever thought that you could have the same success?
Burdened with heavy school work, many high school students in China are told to lock themselves in their studies and forget about other things.
But actually this is not wise.
Everyone is different and there is no need to follow the life paths of our ancestors(祖先). Sessions had dreamt of being a politician since he was a child. Halstead was crazy about airplanes and took every chance to learn about them.
So why not think outside the box, as these boys did? Consider your interests when planning your own path through life. Doing this can be more exciting and makes it easier to succeed. Interest is our best teacher.
But dreaming is not enough. A good education is a stepping –stone to a successful career. It helps broaden your horizons(视野)so you understand more about yourself and therefore perform better. That’s the reason Sessions chose while taking charge of his town.
Success still takes work. Without hard work, a dream is just like a cloud in the air that you never can reach.
