I am usually in a bad mood after a long day at work, but on this particular Friday afternoon I was in a high moodI planned to have a good meal and watch Bridget Jones’s Diary.
My local supermarket is always busyThe first parking space I spotted was convenient, but I’d noticed a woman in an old car circling for a whileI let her have itOn the edge of the car park I backed into the next available spot it was a tight fit.
In record time I’d made my way through the supermarket and was back in the fresh airIn a rush of good spirits, I emptied my purse change into the hands of a homeless man and helped a struggling woman reverse (倒车) into a parking space.
Just as I spotted my car, I saw the woman I’d let have my car spot earlierI smiled and wished her a pleasant day.
As I got back into my car, I spotted the same lady looking in at me Hello, she said, hesitantly (犹豫地) This might sound crazy but I was on my way to drop some of my mother’s things off at the charity bins. I looked quickly at the orange bins in the corner of the parking lot, confused I saw you helping those people, and you seemed so happyMy mom had a dress just like that.
She looked at me meaningfullyI smiled at her in encouragement, hoping she wouldn’t notice that the dress she was admiring was now full of holes I was going to give these away, but you are just so much like her. She passed a box in through the windowShocked, unthinking, I took it automatically (无意识地) I think she would like you to have it. She smiled and walked away.
After a pause, I opened the boxInside was a beautiful gold necklaceIt was the nicest gift I’d ever received, and it was from a complete stranger.
Later, I thought back on the dayI didn’t feel the usual sense of exhaustionThe necklace was around my neck, a warm reminder of human kindness.

【题目】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
I just hope that our brains won’t crash(死机). Are you wo rking on your typing skills to make you a more efficient worker? That may be all for nothing as Intel believes that we’ll be able to control our computers with our brains by 2020.
Intel and its resear ch partners are study ing how brain acts when it thinks. For example, scientists have found that people’s brains react in a similar manner when asked to think of a bear.
Through sensors(感应器)that can find this sort of brain activity, Intel thinks that it will be able to read and translate this into an input system thanks to a c hip in the brain.
“We’re trying to prove you can do interesting things with brain wav es. ”Intel research scientist Dean Pomerleau told Computerworld. “Eventually people may be willing to be, more devoted to brain implants(植入物). Imagine being able to surf the Web with the Power of your thoughts. ”
Even if thin king about a bear isn’t enough to show that you want to copy and paste something. Intel still thinks that there’s a future in using your brain instead of the keyboard.
“If we can get to the point where you can accurately find specific words, you could mentally type, ”he added. “You could compose characters or words by thinking about letters flashing on the screen or typing whole words rather than their individual characters. ”
While this may all sound impractical for present time, Intel thinks that it’s possible and something we’ll all want.
“I think human beings are unusually adaptive(适应的), ”said Andrew Chien, vice pre sident of research and director of future technologies research at Intel Labs. “If you told people 20 years ago that they would be carrying computers all the time, they would have said, ‘I don’t want that. I don’t need that. ’Now you can’t get them to stop carrying device s. There are a lot of things that have to be done first but I think implanting chips into human brains is well within the scope of possibility. ”
Make good use of your favorite mouse and keyboard set-up before they’re old-fashioned.
(1)What are Intel and its partners doing at present?
A.Controlling our computers with our brains.
B.Working on typing skills to improve efficiency.
C.Studying how the brain behaves when it thinks.
D.Finding how the brain reacts when it thinks of a bear.
(2)According to Dean Pomerleau, we can learn that.
A.brain implants will not be accepted
B.he holds negative attitude to the research
C.mentally typing will be possible in the future[来源:学_科_网]
D.people need a period of time to accept the new idea
(3)Computers were taken for example by Andrew Chien(in the last but one paragraph)to prove.
A.nothing is impossible
B.mankind has great power
C.society is always changing
D.human beings can adapt very well
(4)In the last paragraph, the author probably means that.
A.there will be no mouse or keyboard any more
B.new kinds of mouse and keyboard will appear
C.human brains will replace the present computers
D.the mouse and keyboard should be used to the full

【题目】“The car of tomorrow” runs one of the most famous businesses in advertising. People used to believe that science would promise a future of endless spare time and very cheap electricity. Nowadays the scientists’ predictions are a great deal less optimistic: a world challenged by climate change and decreasing resources.

In fact, “the car of the future” is just a symbol of hope. Carbon emis-Investment in new technology to maximize efficiency (效率) and minimize environmental damage is not only cleaning up the automobile producers’ act but is also setting an example to other industries.

It’s said that most cars of today run at about 15 per cent efficiency, which does highlight the potential (突显潜力) for improvement. Get it right, and we could continue to enjoy the freedom that comes with owning a car, without the worries.

Of course, many advances have already been made. There’s evidence that the buying public is eager to switch to cleaner, greener cars. And with petrol prices increasing there is no doubt that economical, efficient engines are going to be in ever greater demand.

The good news is that we can all drive “the car of tomorrow” today, without having to worry about the purchase cost. By choosing our holiday hire cars wisely we can cut down on our fuel costs and experience an eco-friendly drive whether or not we have already made the commitment back home. What’s more, we are caring for the beautiful places we love to holiday in. Hire a green car and you make a difference to the environment.

Designers will always enjoy catching our imagination with “concept cars” that look more like miniature spaceships than anything you see on the highway. Whether vehicles as radical (激进的) as these creations will eventually become family cars remains to be seen. But, for the moment, there’s no doubt at all what “the car of tomorrow” will be, and it’s here today: something familiar and friendly that does its job with considerably less trouble and much greater efficiency than the car of yesterday.

1From the text the author wants to .

A. make a comparison B. introduce a new kind of car

C. make an advertisement D. change an old concept

2One current worry about developing the car industry is that .

A. it provides less money

B. it’s not environmentally friendly

C. the competition is very fierce

D. the economic situation affects it a lot

3It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that .

A. fewer cars will be produced in the future

B. cleaner and greener cars are more expensive

C. cleaner and greener cars are in great need

D. no measures have been taken to improve car efficiency

4What can we learn about “concept cars”?

A. It is doubtful that they will become family cars.

B. They’re considered as a result of imagination.

C. They’re of high efficiency and make less pollution.

D. They look like traditional cars on the highway.

Book Description

A profound, startling, and beautifully crafted debut novel, The Sympathizer is the story of a man of two minds, someone whose political beliefs clash with his individual loyalties.

It is April 1975, and Saigon is in chaos. At his villa, a general of the South Vietnamese army is drinking whiskey and, with the help of his trusted captain, drawing up a list of those who will be given passage aboard the last flights out of the country. The general and his compatriots start a new life in Los Angeles, unaware that one among their number, the captain, is secretly observing and reporting on the group to a higher-up in the Viet Cong. The Sympathizer is the story of this captain: a man brought up by an absent French father and a poor Vietnamese mother, a man who went to university in America, but returned to Vietnam to fight for the Communist cause. A gripping(扣人心弦的) spy novel, an astute exploration of extreme politics, and a moving love story, The Sympathizer explores a life between two worlds and examines the legacy of the Vietnam War in literature, film, and the wars we fight today.
