【题目】 Nick Prosser, a 28-year-old New Zealander, has been stuttering (口吃) for as long as he can remember, but he recently discovered that speaking in an Irish accent makes his speech disorder disappear

The young New Zealander claims he discovered the simple cure to his stutter completely by accident, while trying different accents with a friend for fun. When he tried the Irish accent, both he and his friend were amazed that his stutter almost vanished. They were able to have a long conversation without him stuttering at all, which had never happened before. He just couldn’t believe that something so simple could be the cure to a problem that had seriously affected his self-confidence ever since he was a child

“I couldn’t believe it. I had been to so many speech therapists who never suggested this technique, Prosser said

Interestingly, Nick has never been to Ireland, but he believes that speaking in an Irish accent comes naturally for him because of his mother, who comes from an Irish family. He suggests that people suffering from similar speech disorders try looking at their genealogies (家谱) and attempt to speak in an accent associated to them. However, local speech specialist Annette Stock said she had never heard about this technique

“We know as speech language therapists that singing certainly helps with people that have stutters but you can’t just go around singing in your everyday life, Stock said.” I think that this is something that works for, him and that’s fine. But in six months’ time if it is still working I would be saying wow that’s amazing.

So why does the Irish accent make Prosser’s stutter disappear? No one knows for sure, but Ants Haines, who has been Nick’s barber for years, has an interesting theory: he claims that this way, the 28-year-old spends more time thinking how to pronounce the words, which somehow helps

A.She doubted it.B.She tried to prove it.

C.She was confirmed of it.D.She was amazed by its effect.

4What does Ants Haines intend to tell us?

【题目】If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare,” “Samuel Johnson,” and “Webster,” but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English-William the Conqueror.

Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would be close to German.

But this state of affairs did not last. In l066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of Eng-land while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of Politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction (区别) between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating.

When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more "foreign" than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man's ambition.

1The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before l066 were

A.Welsh and ScottishB.Nordic and Germanic

C.Celtic and Old English.D.Anglo-Saxon and Germanic

2Which of the following groups of words are, by inference, rooted in French?

A.president, Lawyer, beefB.president, bread, water

C.bread, field, sheepD.folk, field, cow

3Why does France appear less foreign than Germany to Americans on their first visit to Europe?

A.Most advertisements in France appear in English.

B.They know little of the history of the English language.

C.Many French words are similar to English ones.

D.They know French better than German.

4What is the subject discussed in the text?

A.The history of Great Britain.

B.The similarity between English and French.

C.The rule of England by William the Conqueror.

D.The French influences on the English language.

【题目】 There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting.

When my friend Lily from London used the word "larder", I didn't know what it meant. Realizing I didn't follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food.

The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged.

Most times, I can know what Lily means. Last week, she regretted sending her boys to watch an early morning tennis game without their fleeces. I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like those. Other times, we have to ask each other. She recently told me a funny tale about a woman who was pissed. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that pissed means drunk.

Here is one more example. My British friend Jane was filling out a ticket at the grocery store(食品杂货店)recently. She asked the young man if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn't follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber.

In order to communicate well with the British, we Americans should learn some words that the British use differently. And I think people who learn English as a second language should also realize that there are differences between American English and British English.

1When Lily used the word "larder", she was probably looking for a ________.

A. cupB. ladder

C. cupboardD. cooker

2What does the underlined phrase "jotted down" in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Wrote down.B. Left behind.

C. Looked for.D. Settled down.

3According to the passage, Lily regretted sending her boys to watch a tennis game mainly because ________. .

A. the game was boring

B. she wanted to spend time with her boys

C. she didn't dress her boys in thick clothes

D. her boys got lost

4What is the passage mainly about

A. The British way of using words.

B. Some new words the writer's British friends taught her.

C. The reasons why Americans can't follow the British at times.

D. Some words used differently in British English and American English.

【题目】 We think of hospitals as peaceful and safe places. 1. A study that came out in 2017 showed that one in four doctors in China has suffered from physical violence, with some even losing their lives.

To prevent such things from happening, the government worked out a draft law. It says that the safety of medical staff is protected by law and that no one is allowed to hurt medical workers.

In most cases, the attackers were relatives of patients who were not satisfied with their treatment. 2. But of course, not every illness can be cured. 3. Giving doctors cash bribes (贿赂) to get good treatment has long been an unwritten rule. Some people believe that they were not well treated because they didn’t bribe their doctors. In some cases, their anger in this situation turns into violence. Another problem is a lack of doctors. 4, seeing as many as 60 or more patients in just half a day. It’s difficult for them to provide enough care for each patient.

5. For example, many hospitals have set up offices to hear and handle patients’ complaints.

“When arguments happen, patients should ask for mediation (调解仲裁) or seek legal advice instead of turning to violence,” the State Council said.

A. Doctors need to take measures to protect themselves

B. Most people have high expectations for their doctors

C. Hospitals are trying to find ways to solve this problem

D. Doctors in large public hospitals often have to overwork

E. A general lack of trust in doctors has also made things worse

F. It’s difficult to solve the problems between doctors and patients

G. But doctors and nurses in Chinese public hospitals are often attacked
