【题目】I Think I Can: How to Push Yourself to Success

“Because I can” has magic power. It pushes us to leave our comfort zones. It gives us a reason to do the things that we think we can't. 1.2.

Whether it is to get to the store or work, climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Break the “I’m tired” or

“It is too hard” or “It is too far” cycle. Increasing your activity level will provide enormous benefits, both physically and mentally.

Try Something New

It is easy for us to make excuses for why we shouldn't try new things.3. Maybe it seems too difficult. Or maybe, it is just inconvenient. Reminding yourself that You Can try something new will help you to move past these roadblocks and discover new things about yourself and possible new interests.

Speak Up

Often, we dare not address(处理)things that bother us or make us unhappy.4.Use that voice “because you can.” Communicating to loved ones, co-workers, and even your boss as to how you feel, what your needs and expectations are and what you are thinking can help you develop deeper, more meaningful and rewarding relationships. Further, you will be truer to yourself, thus making you a happier individual.

Increase Your Willpower

5. However, developing a strong willpower, whether it is in response to our favorite chocolate cake or to over-shopping is something that we can all benefit from. Next time you are tempted to do something you think you might regret, try reminding yourself that you can say no. You have the power.

A. Saying “No” to our favorites can be challenging

B. Here are a few ways to apply this positive thinking to your own life

C. You have a voice

D. Be More Active

E. “Because I can” is an easy way to include more activities into your life

F. Maybe you think it is out of your comfort zone

G. A strong willpower can keep us motivated(有动机的)and reach our goals

【题目】The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area. Nauru’s heartbreaking story could have one good consequence — other countries might learn from its mistakes.

For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island.

However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.

Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate (磷酸盐)on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which was a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.

A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine(露天矿). When a company strip-mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.

In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.

Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses. Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem — their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was financially ruined. Experts say that it would take approximately $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.

1What was Nauru like before the Europeans came?

A. Rich and powerful

B. Peaceful and attractive

C. Modern and open

D. Greedy and aggressive

2The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from _____________.

A. whale hunting

B. phosphate overmining

C. farming activity

D. soil pollution

3What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph?

A. The ecological damage is difficult to repair.

B. The leaders will take the experts’ words seriously.

C. The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.

D. The phosphate mines were destroyed.

4What might be the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A. To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.

B. To seek help for Nauru’s problems.

C. To show the importance of money.

D. To give a warning to other countries.

Nervous suspects locked up in Britain's newest police station may feel relieved by a pleasant yellow color on the door . If they are close to confessing(供认)a crime , the blue on the wall might tip the balance .
Gwent Police have abandoned colors such as greys and browns of the 20th-century police cell(牢房)and have used color psychology to decorate them .
Ystrad Mynach station , which recently opened at a cost of £5 million has four cells with glass doors for prisoners who suffer from claustrophobia(幽闭恐怖症). Designers have painted the frames yellow , which researchers say is a calming color . Other cells contain a royal blue line because psychologists believe that the color is likely to encourage truthfulness .
The station has 31 cells , including 12 with a “live scan” system for drunken or disturbed prisoners , which detects the rise and fall of their chest . An alarm alerts officers if a prisoner's breathing stops and carries on ringing until the door is opened .
Designers and psychologists have worked for years on color . Blue is said to suggest trust , efficiency , duty , logic , coolness , thinking and calm . It also suggests coldness and unfriendliness . It is thought that strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter , soft colors will calm the mind and aid concentration .
Yellow is linked with confidence , self-respect and friendliness get the color wrong and it could cause fear , depression and anxiety , but the right yellow can lift spirits and self-respect .
Ingrid Collins , a psychologist who specializes in the effects of color , said that color was an “ energy force ” . She said : “ Blue does enhance communication but I am not sure it would enhance truthful communication . ”
Yellow , she said , affected the mind . Red , on the other hand , should never be considered because it could increase aggression . Mrs. Collins praised the designers for using colors in the cells . Gwent is not the first British force to experiment with color to calm down or persuade prisoners to co-operate , In the 1990s Strathclyde Police used pink in cells based on research carried out by the US Navy .
(1)The expression “ tip the balance ” in Paragraph 1 probably indicates that the blue might __________ .
A.let suspects keep their balance
B.help suspects to confess their crimes
C.make suspects cold and unfriendly in law court
D.enable suspects to change their attitudes to colors
(2)Which of the following helps alert officers if someone stops breathing ?
A.Scanning equipment .
B.Royal blue lines .
C.Glass doors .
D.Yellow frames .
(3)The passage is mainly concerned with __________ .
A.the relationship between colors and psychology
B.a comparison of different functions of colors
C.the use of colors in cells to affect criminals' psychology
D.scientific ways to help criminals reform themselves in prison
