Life is not easy when you are pursuing something worthwhile and ready to learn from the best experiences. It always takes tests and then fails us to learn anything worthwhile. Here are five life lessons which people will learn the hard way in majority of cases.

It takes consistent time and effort to be an expert in any area. People usually get discouraged when it takes more time than they thought it would. At this time, people refer only to people who have already achieved what they want to do. Look at any successful person and you’ll notice one thing common in all of them: they took time to learn and mastered their skill like no one else. There is no elevator to success; you have to take the stairs.

You don’t have to live your life in a way society wants you to. Many old beliefs are being performed these days and are followed blindly. Parents sometimes force their children to select a career they don’t want because other children have selected that career. Worst of all, people follow them without even asking. There is no harm in believing in old beliefs but when you pursue them before your interest, sooner or later you’ll realize that you should first do what you think is right.

We don’t care about the things we get easily. Take health for example. Very few people take their health seriously. They know that if their health is lost, they won’t be happy, but they still eat junk food and never exercise. Why? Because they don’t take their health seriously and the real reason behind that is they have got it for free. We spend thousands on cars and take care of them nicely. Imagine what would have been the price of human body if we had to pay for it?

Be brave to take the road less traveled. In our whole life, we always want to follow the same path that everyone suggests, do the same thing everyone does, take the same career path everyone takes, wear the same clothes everyone wears, and hang out with the same people we work with. Why? Because we are scared to fail. But when you get bored of life, you realize that you are not meant to do what everyone does and that your destiny is different than anyone else’s out there in the world. But the price we pay to realize this is high because it takes a great amount of courage to follow your own trail by listening to your heart.

Break the rules sometimes. We follow rules so that things are in order and no one is disturbed unnecessarily. This is true in case of traffic and other company rules but when it comes to your life, there are rules made by people who are scared to do something apart from their routine and therefore they made rules to prevent others doing so. But when time passes by and you think you are not being directed towards your goal and these so-called rules are your biggest obstacles, BREAK THEM. Sometimes, we need to be bold and act courageously.

In China, Yang Zhiqiao is 77 and has retired. She does the Mickey Mouse costume in Luoyang, Henan Province to earn some pocket money from passers-by, which she saves for her son. “My son is 40 and is still single. I don’t want to be a burden to him. I want to help him financially so he can get a wife,” Yang says.

According to an unrelated news story, parents in a Beijing suburb are getting up at 5 am each day and standing in line for shuttle buses. The early birds have developed this habit not for themselves, but for their grown-up children, who work in downtown Beijing. The youngsters have to spend four or five hours each day commuting and their parents chip in插嘴by waiting in line for them so they can squeeze an extra half hour of sleep.

However, children in the US will leave their parents when they grow up. They want to find better jobs, so they usually live far away from their parents. They often write to their parents or call them. And they go to visit their parents during their holidays.

Parents will ask their children to do some work around their house. In many families children will get money for doing some housework so that they can learn to make money on their own. Parents usually let their children choose their own jobs. Americans think that for young people it is important to decide on their lives by themselves.

【题目】Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said,"I'm tired. Let's go now."

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked.

"Nothing." I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held on to me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, "You gave an old woman a little moment of joy."

1The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ______.

A. show she was familiar with the city

B. see some places for the last time

2The taxi driver did not charge the old woman because he ______.

A. wanted to do her a favor

B. shut off the meter by mistake

C. had received her payment in advance

D. was in a hurry to take other passengers

3What can we learn from the story?

A. Giving is always a pleasure.

B. People should respect each other.

C. An act of kindness can bring people great joy.

D. People should learn to appreciate others' concern.

【题目】Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. In one second, light travels about 300,000 km, but sound travels only 344m. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the Starter, you can See smoke come from his gun before the sound reaches your ears. This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays (光线) left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light which you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 2 million km per minute. In some cases the light from one of tonight’s stars started on its journey to you before you were born.

Thus, if we want to be honest, we cannot say “The stars are shinning tonight.” We have to say, “The stars look pretty. They were shining four years ago but their light has only just reached Earth.”

1Light speed is __________ sound speed.

A. as fast as

B. a million times slower than

C. about millions of times faster than

D. about a million times faster than

2If you stand 200 meters away from a man who is firing a gun to start a race, you will find out that __________.

A. you can hear the sound before you see the smoke

B. the sound does not travel as fast as light

C. the sound will reach you before the man fires

D. sound travels about a million times faster than light

3Sunlight obviously (显然的) __________ than the light of the moon.

A. has to travel a greater distance B. moves less quickly

C. travels much more quickly D. is less powerful

4The scientific way of saying “The stars are shining tonight” should be __________.

A. the stars have been shining all the time

B. the stars seen tonight will shine four years later

C. the stars were shining long ago but seen tonight

D. the starlight seen today could be sera four years ago

【题目】Jack was born without eyes. He’s very lucky with his timing. He grew up having other kittens to play and socialize with, and was used to people from the moment he was born since there are always kids hanging around the barn. He was a favorite amongst the students at the barn. However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up. That’s when I got an e-mail from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens? There’s one here with no eyes and no one can take him.” Without thinking I told her that I did want the kitten.

When we first brought him home Jack stayed mostly in my room. He walked cautiously around, sniffing everything. After about a day he had no issues running around, jumping onto my bed and climbing on everything. He went through a time where he could climb the stairs, but couldn’t get down. He would sit at the top and cry until someone came and got him. Every now and then when he gets disoriented he’ll stop and cry. But we just call his name and talk to him and it isn’t long before he finds his way back to us.

Also, a few weeks after getting Jack, we got a new barn cat named Bear. I always take Jack outside at that time for some fresh air and exercise. He loves to run (at top speed!) around the back yard and gardens. Bear and Jack have become best friends. It doesn’t matter that he can’t see, Jack always knows when Bear is around. He’ll run across the yard straight to Bear and wrap his front legs around his neck in a big hug. They chase each other around and wrestle, and when they’re tired they’ll lie down in the grass together.

Jack is truly an inspiration. I’ve owned a lot of kittens in my life, but Jack is the happiest, most playful of them all. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. Heck, for all he knows, all cats are just like him. People who know Jack don’t feel sorry for him. They cherish him for the treasure that he is. I have talked to a few people who haven’t met him personally who tend to pity him, but they just don’t understand. Jack doesn’t need pity. I think Jean (who has Gumbo the eyeless ginger) said it best when she told me that cats don’t have disabilities, they have adaptabilities.

1According to the first paragraph, Jack __________.

A. got seriously disabled after birth

B. had a good time in the place where he was born

C. ended up wandering in the street at first

D. grew up lonely and sad

2When Jack first came to the authors house, he __________.

A. would cry when he felt lonely

B. was very happy and played wildly in the room

C. had difficulty getting down the stairs

D. always needed someone to guide him

3Which of the following has a similar meaning to the underlined word “disoriented”?

A. Hurt. B. Caught.

C. Lost. D. Broken.

4What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

A. Jack needs people’s pity.

B. All disabled cats have strong adaptabilities.

C. People always feel sad for Jack.

D. Jack’s story has inspired people.
