【题目】Although I started learning English during my college years, when I entered the States, I only understood two English words “Yes” and “No”. We learned many grammar rules but we could not make the language connections to the real English world. Language frustration worries almost all first generation immigrants. For example, I got a letter from a Chinese-American who has lived in the States for a long time and has a good IT job saying “My 11-year-old girl writes quite well, but as her parents, we could not even read her article.”In addition, my Chinese-American professor friend has difficulty reading a novel. Improving our English skills has become a long journey for all of us. Honestly, if I have a chance, I really want to reach out to everyone in the world who has had a similar experience: learning a second language in adulthood. I wish I could encourage them to speak out about the culture shock, frustration they felt about the differences between West and East.

I have mainly focused on my English writing since 2008 after I found “Literacy Volunteers”, an organization that specially focuses on helping immigrants improve their English. I decided to challenge myself, writing a story like an American. I saw many wonderful Americans there. As soon as I met my teacher Alice, I asked her to be my private language tutor and have taken Tims English class. Every week Alice and I have worked on my English essays sentence by sentence.

To observe the culture differences between West and East, occasionally, I posted a few of my English essays online. I mentioned previously about American culture; when people read the same article or even face the same situation, American and Chinese act very differently. In my viewpoint, these differences make America the strongest country in the world. I know you have the right to express your own opinions, but accusing others without proof is not acceptable.

How to plan for a perfect holiday

People often dream of a perfect holiday with white sands, blue beaches and so on. But traveling or sometimes even planning a trip can be more of a stress. Here are some tips to make your holiday a memorable one.

Set a budget. Before making a plan for the holiday, the most important thing is to set a budget. 【1

Plan ahead. The first thing you need to do is to be sure of what you need from this trip. Do you want to experience the local culture or just have fun on those sandy beaches? 2

Read up before you go. 3 Buy a good guidebook and read up on the culture, history, local attractions of the place. You can read the local publications online or surf the Net for more information. The more you know, the better you can enjoy the place and its traditions.

Pack light and right. 4 Avoid carrying unnecessary things around. A heavy luggage may sometimes influence your holiday spirit. Carry clothes that are comfortable and right for the season. As much as possible try to put everything you need in a single carry-on bag.

5 Unreasonable expectations can lead to unwanted stress, so enjoy the holiday by managing what you can with the time you have. Enjoy each moment, whether good or bad.

A. Always book your stay.

B. Have realistic expectations.

C. Pack only the important things.

D. Plan your trip according toyour needs and likes.

E. It helps you to plan and enjoy the trip within your limits.

F. Prepare yourself before visiting an unknown holiday place.

G. All you need is to get away from busy people and the world.

【题目】____【1】 Susan is a big eater. She usually has a lot at every meal. So she wonders whether she could only eat less for the first meal of a day to lose weight.

_____2Tina is a fat girl who doesn’t like exercise much. She just wants to lose weight by eating less but not doing exercise.

_____3 Maggie is a busy office lady. She usually has to work overtime every day. So she could only have her dinner late at night. She wants to be slimmer so that she could be much more attractive.

_____4 Judy is a fashionable designer. She hopes to have a slim shape as models. She usually doesn’t have any regular meal, but has some snacks when she is hungry.

A. If you eat less for breakfast, you have a lower chance of losing weight. Breakfast is important. It gives the body sufficient energy to sustain itself through the morning, and it also stimulates metabolic (新陈代谢) activity in the body. Metabolism is what consumes fat and what makes us slimmer. So, don’t forget to eat something for the breakfast.

B. What makes people fat is not the number of calories for one meal, but the total accumulated over time. So don’t expect your weight to drop when you eat less for just one meal. This needs to be sustained over a period of time. After some time, you will notice a change.

C. Many people stop doing exercise when they eat less. When you do this, your body will burn less fat. So even if people take in less calories, they get rid of less too. The balance is then unchanged.

D. People gain fat not from the food they eat, but from the number of calories in the food. For example, a bunch of vegetables has just one tenth the calories contained in a small bit of chocolate cake. So make sure you have adequate regular meals, but firmly say no to various snacks, milk tea or even instant noodles.

E. If you ate your last meal right before going to bed, the calories accumulated from this meal could be twice the amount accumulated from a same meal if you ate it another time during the day.

【题目】Strong winds and cold temperatures tested New York City Marathon runners on Sunday. Despite the tough conditions, about 50,000 people completed the 26.2-mile course. They wound (曲折而行) their way from the starting line in Staten Island through Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx toward the finish line in Manhattans central Park.

Wilson Kipsang from Kenya won the marathon in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 59 seconds. Because of the wind, his time was the slowest winning time in New York since 1995. it was more than 7 and a half minutes off the world record he set just over a year ago in Berlin. The runners adjusted carefully to 30 mph winds by sticking to a slow pace at the start.

Keitany, also from Kenya, won the women’s title with a final time of 2:25:07. In her previous NYC Marathon, Keitany took an early lead but this year she held back. She and Kenya’s Jemima Sumgong entered Central Park side by side, and Sumgong appeared to be pulling away with just over a mile left. But Keitany had one last burst left and won by 3 seconds. It was the tightest finish in the history of the women’s race. “In the closing miles, my target was to win,” Sumgong said, “but it was Keitany’s day.”

The New York City Marathon has grown from a Central Park race with 55 finishers to the world’s biggest and most popular marathon. Sunday was the 44th edition of the NYC Marathon. The race had its millionth finisher in history.

Keitany, a two-time London Marathon champ, hadn’t run a 26.2-mile race since 2012 because of the birth of her second child. I worked hard for this opportunity, she said. Im happy because I have a victory today.
