12.A strange thing happened to me last Sunday. It was(41)B a beautiful day that I drove to go for a look in the country.
On the way back home,my car(42)A.It was out of gas on a lonely road far from a town.I decided to walk(43)C I found someone who could(44)Dsome gas.
I had walked almost a mile(45)C I finally found a house near the road.I was glad to see it 46
it was getting dark.
I knocked at the door and a little old lady with long white hair answered. She said"I've been(47)Afor you a long time.Come in.(48)D is almost ready."
"But I only come(49)C some gas,"I answered.I couldn't imagine(50)A she was talking about.
"Oh,Alfred!Gas?You (51)A like tea."
I quickly(52)D that my car was out of gas,but she didn't seem to hear me.She just(53)Bcalling me Alfred and talking about(54)C it had been since she had seen me.She was acting very strangely and I was anxious to(55)D.As soon as she went to get tea,I went out of the house as fast as I could.
(56)C,there was another house down the road and I was able to buy the gas I needed. When I told the man about my(57)A,he said,"Oh,that's Miss Emily. She lives by herself in that big house. She's out of her mind, but, but she wouldn't hurt(58)B.She is still waiting for the man she was supposed to (59)D thirty years ago.The day before their wedding he left home and(60)B came back because of the war."

11.It was a rainy day.I was riding on a bus downtown to go to(1)Cwas sitting next to a man in a business suit and didn't(2)Bmuch attention until we both got off at the same stop and walked to the same(3)Bto get a morning paper.
The man running the stand was(4)Dhaving a bad day.He was(5)Aand unsmiling as we purchased our papers, which served to only(6)Amore gloom to my day.The businessman(7)Dand caught my eye.He then continued to smile(8)Cand thanked the newsstand owner for the(9)Cand for being open on such a morning to make sure we were able to get our papers.(10)A,he expressed his appreciation for something most of us would take for granted.
The newsman(11)Aonly with a cold expression. The businessman then pleasantly wished him a pleasant day.As we(12)C,I asked this man why he had(13)Bto be pleasant to the newsman when he obviously didn't care about and didn't respond to his expression of(14)Band friendliness. The businessman smiled at me and said,"Why would I let someone else(15)Cwhat I say and what I feel or what kind of day I'm going to have?"
We then(16)Cto go to our work places. To this day,I don't know anything about that business man.But I've never(17)Dthe words he said and his smile which seemed like a ray of light on a gloomy day. That was a good deed 25 years ago,but the(18)Cthis had on my life has lasted.I never had a(19)Bto thank him personally, but the way in which I choose to look at life as a result of those words is his legacy(遗留之物)to me and my thanks to him.
We cannot control people and situations that come to us,but we can always control our response to them. And in such(20)Adecisions lie our control and personal power to make a difference. And it's something anyone and everyone can do.

10.War started in our house in late July with a month to go before my first day of college. It was a battle of wills over what college I was to attend.Mom wanted me to attend a famous (41)C school, and I wanted to go to a small writing college.Every night for two weeks,we argued, shouted and gave(42)Dtreatments until both sides went to bed with regrets.
It was mostly my (43)A.Since my junior year of high school,I had (44)Bat being a nurse.I took all the science courses, and even worked as a (45)B in my town's local hospital. My (46)A was to help the sick and be superwoman to the world.
Yet,(47)Dgraduation and college neared,it all changed.Treating the sick was(48)B,but not what I was meant to do for the (49)Cof my life.I could picture myself in hospitals,making rounds,and taking (50)C,but I couldn't picture myself happy.It wasn't the (51)A I wanted.
Then,I realized I had been creating and writing stories for as long as I could(52)D.I loved it,and writing was what I had been doing as a(53)B.It was going to be my career. And it had to be.
On August 1st,Mom and I sat down at the dinner table and I told her that she had every (54)Cto choose where to spend her money, just like I had every right to decide where I wanted to go to school. If it was her choice not to(55)Dany of my college education, then I would take a year off to work and earn money so I could go to the college I wanted.
Standing by my decision to be a writer had (56)Dmy firm belief to my mom. Finally we were at (57)A,and she decided to support me,which (58)D the world to me.
Before that time,I had never stood up (59)Bmy parents on any major decision.Choosing which college to attend (60)Cme to become a separate and complete adult.I am now finished with my first semester as a Professional Writing major and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
