18.Life satisfaction is the way persons evaluate their lives and how they feel about their directions and options for the future.It's a measure of well-being and may be evaluated in terms of mood,satisfaction with relations with others and with achieved goals and self-concepts to cope with daily life.It's having a favorable attitude towards one's life as a whole rather than just an evaluation of current feelings.Life satisfaction has been measured in relation to economy,education,experiences,and residence,as well as many other topics.
Life satisfaction can reflect experiences that have influenced a person in,a positive way.These experiences have the ability to motivate people to pursue and reach their goals.As a matter of fact,in these experiences there are two kinds of emotions that may positively influence how people understand their life.Hope and optimism both consist of emotional processes that are usually directed towards the reaching of goals.People who have higher life satisfaction are always full of hope for a better future;additionally,optimism is linked to higher life satisfaction,while pessimism is related to symptoms in depression.
The psychologist,Yuval Palgi,studied the old-old-people who were primarily in their nineties.This subject group was found to have thought highly of their past and present,but they thought lower of their future.A large factor that was talked about in life satisfaction was intelligence.The experiments talk of how life satisfaction grows as people become older because they become wiser and more knowledgeable,so they begin to see that life will be better as they grow older and understand the important things in life more.But when they step into their nineties,future becomes a luxury to them.
According to Seligman,the happier people are,the less they are focused on the negative.Happier people also have a greater tendency to like other people,which promotes a happier environment,which then correlates to a higher level of the persons'satisfaction with their life.

5.About 30 years ago,I left Cuba for the United States with my son.After getting settled finally in Brunswick,New Jersey,I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten.Several weeks later,my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office.
In the teacher's office, and exchange of greetings was followed by his questions:"Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)?Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?"
Was he talking about my wonderful Scola?NO,no,it can't be.What a helpless,lonely moment!I told him that Scola was a quiet,sweet little boy,instead.I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.
My son could not follow the teacher's directions,he told me,and thus,Scola was disrupting the class.Didn't he know my son did not speak English yet?
He was angry;"Why hasn't your son been taught to speak English?Don't you speak English at home?"
No,I didn't speak English at home,I replied.I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months,and I didn't want him to forget his nativ e language.Well,wrong answer!What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all time?"Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country,never wanting to be a part of this society?"
Needless to say,I tried to tell him I was not one of"those people."Then he told me the meeting was over,and I left.
As I had expected,my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over.He went on to graduate from college and got a job,earning close to six figures.He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted,contented life.And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的).
Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others; it teaches people about other cultures and other places-something very basic and obviously lacking in the"educator"I met in New Jersey.

6.Why do people drink too much,eat too much,smoke cigarettes or take drugs?What's to blame for all the bad behavior?Most people would say that,while these self-destructive (自我毁灭的) acts can have many root causes,they all have one obvious thing in common:they are all examples of failures of self-control,lacking the will power to resist(抵抗) them.
According to a recent study,however,if you really think about it,something about that simple answer doesn't quite make sense.In fact,it turns out that sometimes it's having will power that really gets you into trouble.
Think back to the time you took your very first sip of beer.Disgusting,wasn't it?When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager,I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it.And smoking?No one enjoys their first cigarette-it tastes awful.So even though smoking,and drinking alcohol or coffee,can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist,they never,ever start out that way.
Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control.Ironically (讽刺的是),only those who can control themselves well,rather than give in to them,can ever come to someday develop a"taste"for Budweiser beer,Marlboro cigarettes,or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee.We do it for social acceptance.We force ourselves to consume alcohol,cigarettes,coffee and even illegal drugs,in order to seem experienced,grown-up,and cool.
These bad habits aren't self-control failures-far from it.They are voluntary choices,and they are in fact self-control successes.Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use,helpful or harmful.To live happy and productive lives,we need to develop not only our self-control,but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.

28.What do most people think causes bad behavior?B.
A.Being forced by others.

C.Enjoying their first experiences.
D.Following the examples of their friends.

A.will power helps develop bad habits sometimes
B.drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers
C.self-control should be developed when one is young
D.everyone can be challenged by different temptations
30.In the last paragraph,the author stresses thatC.
A.without self-control,no one can succeed

C.applying self-control correctly is important
D.people can develop wisdom from bad behavior

C.Will Power Benefits Us
D.Dark Side of Self-control.

I know this may be hard to believe, but the world is waiting on YOU!Yes,YOU!(38)GSure,other people may be able to sing. But they'll never be able to sing exactly like you.Sure other people can write, but they'll never be able to write from the same perspective in which you write.Don't deprive the world of your gift.
It's the oxygen that we need to survive. Thus,it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is,and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.
