13.Many adults enjoy a cup of coffee to have extra energy on a sleepy morning, and astronauts are  no exception. But having a drink in space isn't as easy as it is on the earth. You have to come up  with a whole new way to drink, and that's what scientists are trying to do.
"The coffee would be very hard to control in a normal cup,"said physics professor Mark Weislogel."You'd have to shake the cup toward your face and hope that some of the hot liquid floats toward your mouth. When it comes to guessing what liquids will do in new systems,we are often in the dark."
Weislogel believes that creating a big zero-gravity cup would help improve the lives of  astronauts in space,so he and other researchers per formed a series of experiments with liquids on the International Space Station (ISS) to see how they move upwards on surfaces in zero gravity.
In one of the tests, they placed two surfaces very close together to create a very narrow tunnel. They  wanted to see if liquid would easily flow up the tunnel. In another test, the researchers tried to figure out the best angle to place the narrow tunnel at so that the liquids would travel along the corners.
The end result is a cup that doesn't look like a normal coffee cup at all.One side of the cup has a very sharp angle and,in zero gravity, the liquid naturally"flows"up that angled side of the cup, right up to the drinker's lips.
The zero-gravity coffee cup is currently being tested on the ISS by astronaut Don Pettit, who worked with the researchers and helped them invent it."As you sip  (啜饮),more liquid keeps coming, and you can enjoy your coffee in a weightless environment-clear down to the last drop,"said Pettit, who thinks that future humans on Mars will be using this kind of cup to drink during celebrations!

12.Homework will not be a concern for pupils attending a pioneering new secondary school in Norfolk.Instead, the  l,100 children will stay longer at school, doing extra study at school as part of the extended (延长的) school day, which could last until about 5 pm.
Rather than setting homework that pupils could struggle with at home, where there may be limited access to computers, they will do that as independent study in the day. When they go home they should enjoy quality family time. That has been really well received by parents who respect the fact that family time will be family time. But the school would still expect youngsters to study at home ahead of important exams.
Independent learning at school would ensure equality because kids who get help with homework from parents might rely on others too much.
Peter Devonish.a teacher at the school, said,"Having the children at school a bit longer to strengthen their learning is a really good idea, because they can have their time with the family."But he warned."A disadvantage is that our school is in the countryside, which means it's not so perfect to get children home at that time."
Mr.Devonish said they also set pupils project-based homework, such as looking at an energy-efficient house, which allowed them to combine independent study with working with their parents.
Craig Morrison, another teacher, said,"A large problem with homework has been that not enough is done with it.With homework.a lot of effort can go into it,so it's about celebrating what children do rather than processing it in terms of marking it and handing it back."

Children learn by example.Children will automatically do what they are taught, but teaching doesn't come through words alone.(38)G.

8.No rows of desks in this classroom, and no teacher lecturing at the front. In fact, that's something Barrie teacher Liz Collett rarely does.Instead, she's on the move, talking to students about their work, from the small group sitting on the floor playing games to others nearby figuring out a math problem.
The children in this class do not take a spelling test all year-in fact, the school avoids all pencil-and-paper tests-nor do they get assigned homework.Instead, their teacher gives them immediate feedback(反馈) on their work throughout the day.
Welcome to the school of the 21st century,a place where teachers and students cooperate all the time.Such advanced classrooms are trying things, which some might consider as coddling kids-letting students give a voice-recorded essay instead of a written one or even allowing teens to design their own courses.
Though some people blame schools for dumbing things down (降低教育标准),others will say such changes are actually based on the newest research on how to attract today's youth and increase not only their interests, but also their achievements. Many of today's school are not holding kid's interests. And if they're not interested, they're not learning-and isn't that the point?
"Students today say they want their education to be useful and valuable, and don't want it to be simply repeating the facts. That's the kind of learning that be happening for many kids,"says Penny Milton,a researcher."What we could argue is that to become good learners, they need to become thinkers."
Jan Olson, anther researcher, says schools have been operating the same way since the Industrial Revolution. But the digital age is bringing an education revolution. While using technology is a part of it,what's important for students is being able to use information and understand it,not just remembering it.
Today's learner needs fewer traditional tests and more"effective"feedback, ongoing discussion with a teacher, which studies have found is the number one factor in improving achievement.

7.Hi guys!I'm Lucy the Ladybird and while I'm very much of a lady,I'm not actually a bird but a glowing red beetle(甲虫) with decorative black spots.
I'm a friendly little bug,to be honest, and simply like to be close with my pals as long as they handle me very gently.I don't bite humans but I do sink my teeth into mean beasts like aphids (蚜虫) which, unlike me,are very harmful to all the plants.I milk the aphids just like people do with cows and I milk them dry of all the sap (汁) they have got from your poor plants.I'm a real gardeners'friend and love helping out around the place by pollinating flowers, tidying up plants'fallen leaves and helping to turn them into nice rich fertilizer to feed everything both above and below the soil, and naturally, being so attractive to look at,we are perfect living garden decorations.
One thing I can not tolerate is all that poisonous pollution from vehicles, garbage burning and other un-environmentally friendly acts that occur in the cities every single minute of the day and night.Pollution of any kind really chokes me to death,so these days,I only live in clean countryside areas, particularly cool ones where it rains and everything grows fresh and green from spring right through to autumn. In winter, when the weather is too cold for me to bear, then I find a nice place to sleep until the snow has gone and I can come back out to play.
Oh!I almost forgot to tell you that although I am not a bird I do have wings and can fly for short distances. So if you pick me up and let me run up and down your hands and arms, then please don't frighten me by screaming if I suddenly secede to take off!

Livemocha is now experimenting with a variety of ways that resemble the games on other social websites to motivate people. The flashcard exercises, for instance, are scored, and the totals earned by studying and teaching appear on the users'front page.
Besides, each person can set up a profile(简历)which includes a short description of his age, location and what language he would like to learn. Therefore,if you want to study one language, you will easily find many people who are fluent in it.Andl an email or two is all it takes to find a study partner.
