When you turn on the radio, you hear an advertisement. 1       If you turn the pages of a newspaper or magazine, again you find an advertisement. If you walk down the street, you see one advertising board after another. All day, every day, people who want to sell you something compete to catch your attention. As a result, advertisements are almost everywhere.

2       Many TV stations, newspapers, magazines, radio stations are privately owned in the West. The government does not give them money. So where does the money come from? From advertisements. Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses.

3       Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For some time it was felt that advertising was a means of " keeping your name before the public”. And some people thought that advertising was " truth well told". Now more and more people describe it in this way:

Second, advertising is not personal. It is not face to face communication. Although you may feel that a message in a certain advertisement is aimed directly at you,in reality,it is directed at large groups of people. Third, advertising is usually persuasive. Directly or indirectly it tells people to do something. 5       Fourth, the sponsor of the advertisement must be identified. From the advertisement,we can see if the sponsor is a company,or an organization,or an individual. Fifth, advertising reaches us through traditional and nontraditional mass media. Included in the traditional media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and films. Nontraditional media include the mail, matchbox covers, and billboards (广告牌) .

   A. First, advertising is usually paid for.

   B. All advertisements try to make people believe that the product, idea,or service advertised can do good to them.

   C. Advertisements are very popular in Asian countries.

   D. When you watch television, you hear and see an advertisement.

   E. In the West, advertisements are the fuel that makes mass media work.

   F. Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is?

   G. It takes a large amount of money to produce an advertisement.

Driving a car at high speed along a highway seems to be fun. 1       It will take you to where you wish.

2       A taxi driver has to have not only good driving skills but also a good knowledge of the map of London, from the smallest lane (小巷) to the most popular bar around. He has to be at the service of all kinds of passengers at all times.

3       During the night it is quite usual for him to stop two or three times for some refreshments (点心) .He said, "I never drink when I'm working―I would lose my license."

4       There are times he has to stay longer and try to make more runs. He said, "That's the worst thing about working for yourself. If you don't make the money,no one is going to give it to you."

5       Every summer hundreds of children from London will go for a day at the sea―by taxi!Their rides are paid by the taxi drivers, and these fares all go to the "London Taxi Fund for Underprivileged Children". At the sea, they are met by the mayor, and a lunch party is also held in honour of the taxi drivers and the children. After a happy day running around the sea beaches and visiting the market, the children go home again―by taxi, and free of charge,of course!

   A. London taxi drivers not only "take" but also "give".

   B. London taxi drivers enjoy talking to passengers much.

Proverbs are quite common in spoken English. We don't normally put them in a composition or a letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples:

1       If a dog bites me,I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.

2       If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds,it is better to catch one than to see two birds in a bush but not able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.

3       When too many people do something, they get in each other's way and do a bad job. "Pour oil on troubled waters" is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If

a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However,it may first pour oil on the sea to mi^ce the sea less rough.

"Don't be a dog in a manger (食槽) "means "don't be selfish". In a stable (;马厩) ,the manger is the place where the horse's food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.

"He is sitting on the fence" means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.

4       A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan,he can say how it will be carried out.

5       means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want, for example, you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.

   A. You can't get blood out of a stone."

   B. "He who pays the piper calls the tune."

   C. "Once bitten,twice shy."

   D. "It is pouring cats and dogs."

   E. "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

   F. "It is no use crying over spilt milk."

   G. "Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup) ."

There are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue (过度的) absorption (专注) in the past. There is no need to live in memories,in regrets for the good old days,or in sadness about friends who are dead. 1      ,and to things about which there is something to be done.

It is unwise to be too attached to the youth in hopes of sucking vigor from their vitality (活力) . 2      ,they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are cold to you.

I think a successful old age is easier for those who have strong impersonal interests involving proper activities. 3      ,both because they will not believe you,and because mistakes are an essential part of education. But if you are one of those who are incapable of impersonal interests, and you only concern yourself with your children and grandchildren, then you must realize that while you can still give them material services, such as making them an allowance, you must not expect that they will enjoy your company.

4       But in fact the best way is to make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal. An individual human's existence should be like a river―small at first, rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. 5      ,and the banks move back and in the end they become merged (融入) in the sea without any visible break.

The old man who can see life in this way will not suffer from the fear of growing old and death.

   A. Gradually the river grows wider

   B. When your children have grown up

   C. Family will always be the sweetest place.

   D. Some old people are afraid of death.

   E. One's thoughts must be directed to the future

   F. We should change ourselves to suit the world.

   G. It is no use telling children not to make mistakes
