Dear Bob,Thank you for your last letter ask about our library.

Let me make a brief introduction to our library. It is locating in front of our teaching building, faced the garden on the other side. And a variety of trees are planted around it. The wonderful surroundings make it a splendidly place to study in.

Our library has a large amounts of books, covered all fields of science, literature, art and so on. But you can easily pick up that you need, since they are clear classified in order.

The library is opened from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and closed at weekends. You can lend five books at one time and should return them in ten days. Or you can just read inside the library as enough tables and chairs are provided.

Best wishes,Tom

Reading can be fun,1       if your speed is not as fast as you'd like it to be. The average reading speed can range from 200 to 350 words per minute, but that speed can vary depending on your reading experience and the materials you are reading. It's also important to understand what you are reading―even when you improve your speed. Here are a few tips to help you become a better reader.

Adjust your reading speed as you read different materials. Slow down when the material is new to you or you need to understand the material fully. Speed up if you are already familiar with the material or 2       Another way to improve your reading speed is to focus on the key words in the sentences. A large amount of reading time is wasted on conjunctions, prepositions,or articles (i. e. a,an, the, but, and, etc.) .

Talk about what you've read. Some readers find that by talking about their reading with friends or fellow students, they are able to understand the material more effectively. Determine a reading schedule that works for you. You may find that you can't concentrate on the material for more than an hour (or a half hour) . 3

4       it will slow down your reading speed. If you absolutely don't understand part of the reading selection,go back and review the material later.

Find a proper reading place, where interruptions or distractions will not disturb your reading. Practice. Practice. Practice. 5       Try out some of the above techniques, and then perfect the strategies that work best for you.

   A. Look up the new words when you are reading.

   B. Also select a time of the day when you are ready to read.

   C. but it can also be timeconsuming

   D. another good way is to analyze the sentences when the article is tough

   E. Don't reread right away;

There are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue (过度的) absorption (专注) in the past. There is no need to live in memories,in regrets for the good old days,or in sadness about friends who are dead. 1      ,and to things about which there is something to be done.

It is unwise to be too attached to the youth in hopes of sucking vigor from their vitality (活力) . 2      ,they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are cold to you.

I think a successful old age is easier for those who have strong impersonal interests involving proper activities. 3      ,both because they will not believe you,and because mistakes are an essential part of education. But if you are one of those who are incapable of impersonal interests, and you only concern yourself with your children and grandchildren, then you must realize that while you can still give them material services, such as making them an allowance, you must not expect that they will enjoy your company.

4       But in fact the best way is to make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal. An individual human's existence should be like a river―small at first, rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. 5      ,and the banks move back and in the end they become merged (融入) in the sea without any visible break.

The old man who can see life in this way will not suffer from the fear of growing old and death.

   A. Gradually the river grows wider

   B. When your children have grown up

   C. Family will always be the sweetest place.

   D. Some old people are afraid of death.

   E. One's thoughts must be directed to the future

   F. We should change ourselves to suit the world.

   G. It is no use telling children not to make mistakes

An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You've never been to an American's home before, and you're not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. 1       That's what hospitality is all about―making people feel at home when they're not.

The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests feel restless. For some countries, giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety. 2       Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their hosts. Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers or candies.

American hospitality begins at home, especially when it involves food. 3       Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food. Plan to arrive on time,or else call to inform your hosts of the delay.

When you've had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you're the guest, your hosts may not let you. After an hour or so of general chat,it's probably time to leave. 4       It's more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour.

Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. 5       As one 19th century French writer put it, "The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest. " While you're staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. And they may even invite you back!

   A. During the dinner conversation,it's customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal.

   B. When you're the guest, you should just make yourself at home.

   C. But in American culture,a guest is not obligated to bring a present.

   D. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee.

   E. And above all, don't go snooping around the house.

   F. Your host family will appreciate your consideration.

   G. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days.

There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. 1       But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with,an individual will have a low level of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. 2       If an individual is disabled environmentally,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individuaFs intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins,Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died. 3       Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. 4       He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated (刺激) intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I. Q. was 125,twentyfive points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. 5

   A. So the second factor is what happens to the individual.

   B. Meanwhile,Mark was adopted by a poor foster home.

   C. Then they were placed in separate foster homes (收养家庭) .

   D. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others.

   E. Mark was raised in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college.

   F. Secondly, whether you are brought up in a city or a poor village is also significant.

   G. Given equal opportunities, the twins would have tested at roughly the same level.
