Everybody knows about lots of relatively easy things on weight loss. 【1】 However, if you have ever tried some before without success, then the following guides could be more useful for your life.

There’s no magical diet.

We often think that if we can just discover the “right” kinds of foods, we’ll magically lose weight or maintain what we’ve lost. In fact there doesn’t seem to be any “right” diet, and there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that one particular diet will work better with an individual’s body. __2

Dieting gets the better of exercising.

It is said that exercise is the key to weight loss—taking the stairs instead of the elevator will make a difference, for instance. 3 Decreasing food intake is much more effective than increasing physical activity to achieve weight loss. Of course, both together would be even better.

Work harder than other people.

Exercise may not help go back to what it was before you gained weight. So if you’ve been overweight and you lose weight, maintaining that loss means you’re probably going to have to work harder than other people. Building muscles can help your body burn a few more calories. 4 It seems unfair, but that’s the way it is.

For energy balance, it’s the number of calories that counts. It’s certainly true at least in theory and sometimes in practice. You can gain weight eating too much healthy food as well as unhealthy food. So the point is not to question what a calorie is, but rather to understand that we need to exchange the calorie-packed foods for foods that are less calorie-dense and more nutritionally dense.

A. All calories are created equal.

B. Some of them are also extremely effective when actually carried out.

C. A calorie is a calorie!

D. We know pretty much that any diet will work if you follow it.

E. However, it’s much more efficient to cut calories.

F. Some of the calories we burn come from our basic exercise.

G. However, it’s also likely that you’ll have to do more in the long run.

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off . You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. ______【1】________.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating , for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places and so more likely to eat lots of food. 2 .

______3_____ . Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites . In one study , people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room . Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing , while cold colors make us feel less hungry . So when it’s time to repaint , go blue.

Don’t forget the clock or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down , turn on relaxing music. 4 .

Downsize the dishes. 5 . We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one ,total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

【题目】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Wildlife conservationists in Kenya are trying to save a rare kind of rhinoceros (犀牛). So many northern white rhinos have been hunted and killed that they are almost dying out. There were only five northern white rhinos left. So the workers hoped they could save the rhinos by helping them produce young.

Three northern white rhinos lived at The Ol Pejeta Conservancy (保护区) in Kenya. Workers with military weapons guarded the rhinos as they walked, played and ate over a large area of natural grass and trees. The three rhinos were brought to the conservancy in 2009 from a zoo in the Czech Republic. Workers hoped they would have a better chance of survival in a more natural habitat.

But breeding has not been as successful as they had hoped. And the number of northern white rhinos continues to decrease. One of the rhinos at the conservancy died in October. Another died at a zoo in the US city of San Diego, California earlier this month. The San Diego zoo still has one northern white rhino left. The zoo in the Czech Republic also has one.

The last wild northern white rhinos were hunted and killed during conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the past ten years. Rhinos are killed because many people in Asia want the animals horns (角). They believe the horns will help with medical problems. But researchers say there is no medicine in the horn, just a kind of hair.

The last male northern white rhino is 41 years old. He has been unsuccessful in producing young with a female rhino. So conservationists will use artificial methods to make a young female become pregnant. If that is not successful, they will try to fertilize a northern rhino egg and put it into a southern white rhino, who will act as a surrogate(代孕) mother. The last solution would be cross-breeding between the northern and southern white rhino species. If cross-breeding is successful, there is hope that some part of the northern white rhino species may still live on.

【1】Why were the three northern white rhinos brought to the conservancy in Kenya?

A. To protect them from being killed by the armed guards.

B. To ensure that they live better in a natural environment.

C. To keep the conservation a good balance of nature.

D. To attract more visitors to come to this area.

【2】In Paragraph 3, it’s inferred that the number of the rhinos falls down to .

A. 1 B. 3

C. 5 D. 7

【3】People hunted and killed rhinos because .

A. they wanted to get rhinos’ horns for medical use

B. rhinos ate natural grass and trees on their farmland

C. get rid of the threat of rhinos from their life

D. they wanted to do researches on producing young for rhinos

【4】From the last paragraph, we can learn that .

A. other measures will be taken to breed rhinos

B. the conservationists lead a busy life in Congo

C. breeding a baby white rhino is quite an easy job

D. cross-breeding is an effective way to produce young
