【答案】Top Meal of the Day

A recent study shows that nearly 50 percent of the school kids do not have breakfast. They tend to feel sleepy all day and unable to concentrate on the lessons, so it is hard for them to get high marks in all kinds of tests.

There are some reasons for this. To begin with, some students who study late into the night choose to ignore breakfast just to have a few extra minutes in bed. Others, whose parents are too busy to prepare breakfast for them, have to buy it on the way to school with the given money. In addition, a few schoolgirls want to stay slim and often go to school without breakfast.

In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day’s energy. For a creative mind and better judgment, school kids should start their day with a regular breakfast.

【题目】Is it fair for restaurants to ban little eaters? In Monronroeville, a local restaurant, McDain’s, recently decided to ban young children. Alice Roseman, its manager, says kids have bad manners and make too much noise. Other people, however, say the rule is hard to accept. Since it has become a hot topic in public, we caught several local people talking about it.

YES

There is no law stopping restaurants from banning young children. Restaurant owners should be allowed to ban them. Kids often run around and cause problems for waiters and other customers.

----Kate Barker

Kids always cause a mess, but the parents refuse to do anything about their kids’ behaviors. Although kids may be at the center of their parents’ universe, they aren’t at the center of everyone else’s.

------Mike Vuick

Adults sometimes want to talk and enjoy their dinner, but they can’t if a child is crying and running all over the place. That’s why sometimes parents don’t like eating at home. They wish they could have a good meal in the restaurants without kids’ noise.

------Dale Levitsky

NO

Banning kids from restaurants is a bad idea. If kids were banned, many restaurants would lose business. Even if restaurants gave customers the chance to buy take-away meals for their kids, many families would probably still not eat there.

--------Nicholas Song

Restaurants owners who ban kids think all children are wild and rude. But that’s not true. Most children’s eating behaviors are good enough. Even though some kids do have bad manners, banning is not a right way to teach them. I think how a society treats its children is important. After all, all kids are people, too.

【题目】Over 40 years ago, a country music DJ convention (大会) was held every year in Nashville, Tennessee. Many country performers used to attend (参加) the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born.

The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972, in Nashville for four days. Some of country music's biggest stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that planning began almost immediately for 1973. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans attended the second Fan Fair.

Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the fairgrounds for another nineteen years.

There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. 【题目】My name is Jake. I’m brown, and rather short, standing just a little past my master’s knees. My friend Andy once took me to a dog show. I’ve never seen so many different-looking dogs in my life! They all looked pretty and handsome, and their masters were very proud of them when they jumped and ran across so many barriers at that dog show. Andy promised that he’d let me join a dog show, too, if the organizers opened a division for my “breed”.

While I was watching that show, I remembered my friends at the pound(走失猫狗的待领处), where I spent two long weeks. We were kept in cages, and although we were well-fed, every day during those two weeks, I hoped to have someone touch my head and play with me.

You could just imagine how glad I was when, one day, Andy came in with his dad and pointed in my direction. I stood up on my hind legs and did a little jig (一种快步舞), and then I wagged my tail and tried to chase it. The father and his son kept laughing at what I was trying to do, and in a few minutes, I was riding on their car on the way to my new home. I was Mr. Archer’s gift for Andy’s eighth birthday. I heard him shout that I was the best gift ever!

My favorite amusement is hanging my tongue out of the car window and letting the wind blow on my face. I just love long drives! It is during these times that I think of all my friends whom I left behind at the dog pound. I hope that soon, little boys or girls would also pick them and give them new homes, so they would be able to enjoy walks in the park and trips to the beach, as I do now.

1Why didn’t Jake join the dog show?

A. Because he wasn’t handsome enough.

B. Because his “breed” was not included.

C. Because Andy didn’t allow him to join in.

D. Because he couldn’t jump and run across barriers.

2What can we learn about Jake when he was at the pound?

A. He couldn’t get enough food.

B. He couldn’t enjoy full freedom.

C. He had to stand all the time.

D. He was satisfied with his life.

3Why did Mr. Archer come to the pound that day?

A. To donate some food. B. To volunteer at the pound

C. To find his son a gift. D. To spend his holiday

4According to the last paragraph, what wish does Jake have?

A. Having more long drives with Andy.

B. Meeting his friends at the pound again.

C. More boys and girls coming to play with him.

D. His friends at the pound being adopted.
