8.Peyton,an 11-year-old boy from Florida, has the enthusiasm of scientific invention and the-gift of Thomas Edison.
The sixth-grader put his math and science skills as well as some real-life experience to use and created something that could benefit our world a lot--the sandless sandbag.Today he was named the winner of the Young Scientist Challenge for his sandbag.
"I had a really terrifying experience with a hurricane,"said Peyton."When I was 4,I experienced Hurricane Wilma. When it hit Florida in October 2005,my family and I crowded in a closet and watched the storm bring damage and death to our area, feeling terrible and hopeless."
Saltwater flooding caused great damage, which made him think about how people can prepare for floods.Peyton, who has been solving math problems since he was 3,eventually came up with the sandless sandbag.
"Instead of filling it with sand,I filled it with just the right amount of chemicals and salt,"he said."What's amazing is that when you pick these bags up and they're not wet, they only weigh a pound or two."
Unlike regular sandbags,Peyton's is light and easy to carry. They only expand when doused (浸泡)with water. The bags are portable when dry and will not float away when wet.
Experts praised his invention and said that the sandless sandbag could someday save a lot of lives and possessions."He understands the big picture. He thinks in terms of the influence on society and safety for the people around this area,"said Dr.Antonio, the engineering chairman at the University of Miami."We'd love to have him at our university."
Peyton has to get through middle school and high school first, but until then, the young scientist will continue thinking and inventing.

Today he was named the winner of the Young Scientist Challenge for his sandbag.
I had a really terrifying experience with a hurricane,"said Peyton."When I was 4,I experienced Hurricane Wilma. When it hit Florida in October 2005,my family and I crowded in a closet and watched the storm bring damage and death to our area, feeling terrible and hopeless."故选A
Instead of filling it with sand,I filled it with just the right amount of chemicals and salt.
They only expand when doused with water. The bags are portable when dry and will not float away when wet. What's amazing is that when you pick these bags up and they're not wet, they only weigh a pound or two."故选C
50.D 理解推断题.仔细阅读文章可以发现佩顿发明的沙袋遇水会变重,因此可以阻挡洪水,故D正确.误解分析:由第六段最后一句the engineering chairman at the University of Miami."We'd love to have him at our university"只是想要佩顿去他们大学而没有确定,因此选项A错误;Experts praised his invention and said that the sandless sandbag could someday save a lot of lives and possessions.

19.My teacher,Mr.August J.Bachmann,was the most influential teacher I ever had.
I had gotten into trouble in his class:Another student had pushed me for fun,and I became angry and began to hit him.Mr.Bachmann stopped the fight,but instead of sending me to the office,he sat me down and asked a simple question:"Penna,why are you wasting your life?Why aren't you going to college?"
I didn't know anything about colleges or scholarships.No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future.That day,instead of rushing off for lunch,he stayed and explained possible education options to me.At the end of our talk,he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college.This was in 1962at Emerson High School in Union City,New Jersey.
Well,53years have passed,and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me?I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal.
I've sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations.I've won a number of great educational awards.But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.
I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher.If I have saved any children,it is because of him.If I have been a successful educator,it is because I had a great role model in Mr.Bachmann.

16.Henry Ford grew up on an un-electrified farm,and as a young man he followed Edison's career as the inventor became a national role model.Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer.
In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and,though still working for Edison Co.,he had created his first experimental automobile the Ford Quadricycle2during his off-time. At an Edison company party in New York,Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison and was able to explain his new automobile to the great inventor. Edison was impressed. Edison is said to have slammed his fist down and shouted¨Young man,that's the thing!You have it!Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant."Edison himself had been working on the idea,but had only been considering electricity as the power source,so the idea of a gas engine was a somewhat new one.
The words comforted Ford greatly,who immediately set out building a second car which was to become the Model-T.6.The two men became f'ast friends and would go on camping trips together.When Edison later became limited to a wheelchair,Ford brought an extra one to his house so they could race.At the 50th anniversary of the invention of light-bulb,Ford honored Edison.When Edison spoke,he ended his speech directed at Ford:"As to Henry Ford,words fail to express my feelings.I can only say that he is my friend."Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he passed away in 1931.
Once,Ford asked Thomas Edison's son Charles to sit by the dying inventor's bedside and hold a test tube next to his father's mouth to catch his final breath. Ford was a man with many strange behaviors( as was Edison)including some interest in reanimation and spiritualism(夏活通灵术)and some say that he was attempting to catch Edison's soul as it escaped his body in hopes of later bringing the inventor back to life.
The test tube itself didn't turn up until 1950when it was listed in the Ford possessions after Clara Ford's passing away,and then lost again until 1978when it was discovered in an exhibit Entitled"Henry Ford-A Personal History"in the Henry Ford Museum.It would then be discovered that the tube was labeled"Edison's Last Breath".
There is a further mystery of this"last breath"test tube. It would seem as if Edison had quite a last breath indeed,as the Edison Estate holds a collection of 42test tubes all supposedly containing Edison's last breath.
Regardless of the excitement over the last breath,the test tube is quite touching in its meaning.Although both men were known for all sorts of poor behavior towards.their loved ones and mistreatment of employees,between them at least,there was clearly a deep respect and admiration.

3.After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon,he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once.He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet,but he was struck by the lightning.Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree.He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes,he could hardly believe what he saw:a plough and a wall. When Mrs.Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help,he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.

In the late 1990s, Google was just a start-up company operating out of a garage in Palo Alto, California. Co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin started the company while studying at Stanford University. Google's founders and its employees, then, understood some of the challenges that entrepreneurs around the world may face. An entrepreneur is a person who starts a business. They must be willing to risk financial loss in order to make money.

Mary Grove is the director of a program called Google for Entrepreneurs. She said Google wants to help new start-up businesses grow and be successful.

Google for Entrepreneurs has opened campuses around the world. Entrepreneurs in each city can use Google's buildings without paying. Entrepreneurs can work with each other and learn from people who are more experienced in business.

Yeram Kwon is the head of a company in South Korea. Her business is called I.M.Lab. It makes a product that helps people learn to perform the lifesaving technique called CPR. She said she has learned how to solve some of her business's problems by attending Google events in Seoul.

Outside of its own buildings in these cities, Google provides financial support and resources for partner organizations around the world. Building partnerships is a way for Google to spread the idea of entrepreneurialism around the world. Google can use its network to help find people who want to invest in start-up businesses. Those people need to be ready to take risks. That is something Kwon said that makes some Koreans uncomfortable. "Most Korean people think that it is much safer to work for big companies like Samsung and LG," she said.

But, Kwon said the Korean government and technology companies are now supporting people willing to take business risks.
