When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.

One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens(十几岁) or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

__1.__You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating , sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.__ 2._ A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 3._ Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. __4.__If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

_5.___ You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

E. Maybe you are an average student.

F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher asys in class.

G. This will help you understand the next class.

Imagine yourself in a small airplane 3,300 meters above the ground. The engines roar in your ears as you move towards the open door. Then you' re outside, falling with the wind whipping past your ears. As the ground rushes up at you, you open your parachute. 1.. All in all, you were in free fall for only 30 seconds---the longest 30 seconds of your life.

2.. However, a growing number of adventurers are taking the risk. Obviously skydiving isn't something you can just try, like fishing or bowling. So, if you want to attempt the sport, you'll need to go to ground school.

3.. The course is taught by licensed skydiving instructors who have been jumping for years.

They'll teach you how to keep your body position stable. You'll also learn to be constantly aware of your altitude and, most importantly, when to open your parachute.

Once you' re through with ground school, it's time to get up in the air. 4.. Two instructors always jump with the person, ready to pull the student's parachute open if he or she freezes up.

5.. It certainly seems dangerous when you' re watching someone fall at 200 km/ hr. But, if you believe the statistics, skydiving is actually safer than driving, with one fatality (死亡) occurring in approximately 60, 000 jumps. Moreover, most enthusiasts agree all fear stops the second your feet leave the plane, and when you land, the only thought in your mind is, "Wow! I want to do that again!"

A. However, a new jumper never jumps alone.

B. It takes years to forget the taste of fear from skydiving.

C. No doubt, you're thinking skydiving is a dangerous sport.

D. It explodes over your head, pulling you back and upwards.

E. For most of us, skydiving is something we only see in the movies.

F. Ground school is where you learn to jump, without leaving the ground.

G. Skydiving is the sport of jumping out of an airplane and falling freely through the air.

I've always felt a bit sad for weekend fathers, who are divorced and must maintain a bond with their children through visits on the weekend. Not having the opportunity for a lot of quality time, they go in for quantity giving lots of gifts and taking the children on non stop outings.

But now I can understand.I'm a weekend mom.My child, Henry, is a dog.

Henry just returned to his father, Jack, after a happy stay with me.For ten days, I fed him the best food, canceled plans to stay home with him and let him sleep on the bed every night.

Jack and I broke up a year ago.But neither of us wanted to part with Henry, so we share him.Not surprisingly, Henry is a willing participant in our contest for his love.

Jack doesn't let Henry sleep on his bed, so that's where I can always gain big points.I feed Henry higher quality food.I am always replacing his expensive “thingy" ,a cotton knot he likes chewing on.It' s his favorite toy, and the only one he has is at my house.Score another one for me.

Jack now has a girlfriend, Lucy.At first she was afraid of dogs, which secretly delighted me.But that Henry, just trying to be polite(the way I taught him to be),won her over.

If truth be told, as time passes, there has been a slight change in Henry' s behavior toward me.The worst was one day when Jack dropped him off for a two week stay.Henry and I were in the backyard playing as Jack was driving off. When he heard Jack's truck, he ran after it for two blocks until Jack had to stop and bring him back.

That hurt, especially since I had friends over at the time.In a rare conciliatory (安抚的) mood, Jack said to me, "You know, I' m his best friend, but you'll always be his mom."

Whatever it takes, I plan to make sure it stays that way.
