2.We all dream of living a long,happy life,but where are the happiest places in the world?
A new map of 151countries has revealed exactly which parts of the globe deliver long and happy lives for their citizens.The results may surprise you,with Costa Rica,Colombia and Vietnam topping the league.The UK features at position 44-higher than Germany (47),Spain (62),Canada (65),Australia (76)and the US (105).
The map was made by the relocation website Movehub,using data from the latest Happy Planet Index (HPI)-a global measure of sustainable wellbeing(可持续幸福).
The HPI measures life expectancy(平均寿命),the level of well-being experienced and ecological(生态的) footprint.Each of the three aspects is given a traffic-light score based on thresholds for good (green),middling (amber) and bad (red) performance.These scores are combined to an expanded six-color traffic light for the overall HPI score,where,to achieve bright green-the best of the six colors,a country would have to perform well on all three individual components.
Experienced well-being:This was assessed using a question called the‘Ladder of Life'. This asks respondents to imagine a ladder,where 0represents the worst possible life and 10the best possible life,and report the step of the ladder they feel they currently stand on.
Life expectancy:Alongside experienced well-being,the Happy Planet Index includes a universally important measure of health-life expectancy.We used life expectancy data from the 2011UNDP Human Development Report.
Ecological Footprint:The HPI uses the Ecological Footprint promoted by the environmental charity WWF as a measure of resource consumption.It is a per capita(人均) measure of the amount of land required to sustain a country's consumption pattern.
Two of the three main factors are directly about happiness.The third (Ecological footprint) is regarded as sustainable happiness.i.e.whether a country could sustain its citizens without any outside help.The idea is that if there was an incident which cut a country completely off from the outside world,or a country had to be completely self-sufficient,most of the developed world would be unable to do that.
The reason for some high-income nations to score significantly below other nations is the ecological footprint left on the planet.Mexicans and Canadians both appear to be happier than their US neighbor-most likely due to the country's ecological footprint.

16.The defeat of Lee Sedol, the world's strongest Go (围棋) player,by a Google artificial intelligence (AI) program, looks like another milestone towards a world where computers can do almost anything a human can.It is not. There are uncountable things that only a human can do,and that no computer seems close to.The problem is that the purely human things are not economically useful to anyone. The things that computers can be taught to do are by contrast economically fantastic. But even the most powerful programs are not human, just as a shovel (铲车).They have no feelings. What they have is power, but this power is growing at a rate that should frighten us a ll.
It might be less frightening if computers were truly intelligent, but even the most powerful networks are less human than monstrous Martians (火星人).Their power will be used to make money for the firms that finance their development, and then for others quick and clever enough to take advantage of the new world. It is far more likely that they will increase inequality and still further remove the middle classes as we move towards an hourglass (以金钱来衡量的) society in which everyone is either very rich or very poor and likely indebted.
One of the ill effects of the spread of more intelligent computer networks is,at the same time, the spread of what might be called artificial stupidity. If AI is employed largely to replace unskilled labour,it is most productive when labour is kept unskilled or redefined that way.So much of the work in service industries is now simplified until it might be automated (自动化).And robots will never need pensions.AI is slowly reducing skilled work, like some forms of medical diagnosis (诊断),at the same time,as older doctors complain that the traditional human skills of diagnosis are falling out of medical training. The belief that everything worthwhile can be measured and then managed is far more damaging to humanity than the threat of artificial intelligence on its own.
But no victory in complicated Go games can bring us closer to truly human-like computers.

3.Handwriting has existed for about 6,000years.It's one of our most important inventions.Without it,we wouldn't be able to record knowledge or pass ideas from one generation to the next.
Most of us know,but often forget,that handwriting is not natural.It's not like seeing or talking,which are what we are born with.In early America,only wealthy men and businessmen learned to write.A"good hand"became a sign of class and intelligence as well as morality.Most,meanwhile,signed legal documents with a mere‘X'and the presence of a witness.Writing only spread to the masses in the 19th century,after schools began teaching handwriting.
67  -left-handed students often had their arm tied tightly to their bodies,so they'd learn to write with the"correct"hand.In more modern times,you may remember spending hours learning the correct stroke(笔画),formation and spacing of upper-and lower-case letters.
But today,schools are shifting the focus to coursework in STEM-short for science,technology,engineering and mathematics.With limited hours and an increased pressure to meet higher standards,teachers are emphasizing technology and tablets and less of the written word.
Technology has threatened writing long before every man,woman and child carried a phone.It came with the invention of the typewriter,which standardized written communication,and that same argument will reappear as technology advances.
I don't know if handwriting will ever die.But today,the growing emphasis on typing is having far-reaching effects.To get a glimpse of the future,just look at the youth.Instead of curly Qs or crazy Ls,kids are using emoticons such as ? or Λ to give a personal touch.
Typing is more democratic,too-it isn't a complicated skill to master.Keyboards are changing the physical connection between writers and text,and people who can't write by hand,like the blind,can now use tools to communicate only by touch.
I suppose it's easy to grieve over the passing of one era (年代) into another.Sure,I'll miss the writing of letters,and the beautiful and well-practiced signature written with a pen.And while some pathways in our brains will weaken with the decline of handwriting,we'll develop new ones as we swipe (滑动) and double-click our way into the future.

66.Before the 19th century in America,C.
A.only intelligent people could learn handwriting in schools

D.people would spend hours learning how to write every day
67.Which of the following sentences can best fit in the blank in the third paragraph?B
A.Writing was a means of human communication
B.Writing has always been serious business
C.Schools tried different ways to force students to write
D.Young people worked hard to improve handwriting
68.We can learn from the passage thatD.
A.the invention of cellphones started the decline of handwriting
B.handwriting will disappear because young people write poorly
C.typing makes it possible for blind people to communicate
D.typing is comparatively easy to learn, even for the disabled
69.What does the writer imply in the last paragraph?A
A.The era of handwriting is leaving and that of typing is coming.
B.Letters and signatures are gradually disappearing for sure.
C.The decline of writing has drawn much attention from the public.
D.Our brains will weaken with the decline of handwriting.
14.You want your essay to be the one that is passed around the admissions office-or not.It's a little bit like the difference between being famous and infamous.
We all know that a truthful,well-written essay that shows how the student has matured is sometimes shared among admissions staffers.(36)ESo how do you make your essay famous instead of infamous?
Here are some basic tips to avoid that infamous essay:
●Avoid the generic(概括的)and get specific.Don't write that you're"fully-developed"or that"many people have impacted"you.(37)G
●Don't repeat information that is elsewhere in your application.(38)D It is important for  the student to use every opportunity to show who they are and impress the admissions office.
●(39)C If you have gone through difficult circumstances,you should share your story.But don't blame others.It's important to show perseverance(毅力).A better essay will talk about how you have dealt with and overcome the obstacles you came across.
●Don't talk about rankings.Many students love focusing on the numbers when they are writing their"why this college"essay.(40)A Obviously schools are aware of their rankings.They want to know why you want to attend.

A.They believe they are praising the college by mentioning the fact that the college is highly ranked.
B.It also shows the reader that you are thinking about his or her appreciation of your writing.
C.Don't complain.
D.For example,it is not necessary to share your participation level in your essay.
E.But I'm guessing that there are a lot more essays that produce laughter and gasps of"not again".
F.Don't try to cover everything in an essay.
G.Tell the reader what you've done,how you've been influenced,and by whom.
15.There is a small shop about 200meters from where I live that sells groceries,meat and other basic necessities.About 10years ago,there was a beggar who would go into the shop every day and ask the owner for a (36)C.The owner,although he would love to help,simply didn't have any jobs available,so he kept (37)D the man's request.
This situation continued daily for a few months,until the owner (38)A to give the homeless man a job which (39)B sweeping outside the shop.Every single day from 5am,the homeless man was there doing the very best he could for the (40)C,and it did earn him some pennies.(41)D,the owner saw how good a job the man was doing and gave him a job working as a cashier.He was watched closely to make sure that he didn't (42)B any of the money received from the sales.He was still homeless,after all.The homeless man did a/an (43)A job as a cashier for over 2years,and did such a good job that he was promoted to(44)D the finance for the whole shop.
To my knowledge,this was the arrangement up until 2years ago,when the owner (45)C.In his will,he only had one request,to give the whole shop to the now stable,"homeless"man.Now,I could walk into that shop and see him working as hard as ever,with his own business that is still (46)B and active 10years after getting his job as a sweeper.
From this story,we can probably get the inspiration:work hard and give everything your best effort,even if it isn't your (47)A situation,it may turn out to be very good some day in the future.
