13.Garlic
Garlic,a common seasoning found in many different types of food,has a long medical and mythical history.References to garlic (25)are found(find) in Chinese texts that are dated as far back as 3000BC.The physician Hippocrates used garlic in ancient Greece (26)to treat(treat) infections and physical disorders.In many parts of ancient world,garlic was thought to avoid unfriendly spirits,treat wounds (27)as well as protect against disease.
Roman soldiers believed that garlic brought them courage and energy.They took it with them when they went into battle.Egyptians fed garlic to their servants when they built pyramids.They thought that it gave the workers strength.They also believed that garlic had magical and medicinal powers in the Middle Ages,people thought that garlic prevented the plague(瘟疫).
People have praised the virtues of garlic for centuries.Garlic's popularity began to decline in the early years of the twentieth century,but its reputation (28)has been restored(restore) in recent years.It is now a valuable cash crop in the state of California.Nearly a half-billion pounds of garlic are produced there each year.The city of Gilroy,California,considers (29)itself the garlic capital of the world.Each year,the city hosts the Gilroy Garlic Festival in honor of the crop.
Some doctors are studying garlic's effects as a defense (30)against some forms of cancer.Others are exploring its possibilities for treating arthritis.Garlic has also received praise for its ability to lower high levels of cholesterol(胆固醇).
(31)Although/Though some of the medicinal benefits of garlic have yet to be proven,it is certain(32)that many people enjoy the flavour that it adds to food.

4.Located in northern Manitoba on the west side of Hudson Bay,Churchill is out in the middle of nowhere.But polar bears like it that way.They spend summers on the tundra (苔原) around Churchill.In the fall,they wait anxiously along the shore of Hudson Bay for the ice to form.Then they go out onto the frozen sea to hunt ringed seals--their favorite food.October and November are the best polar-bear viewing times.From tundra vehicles,visitors to Churchill observe the bears.Some enjoy day trips or stay overnight on large tundra vehicles that have private cabins and eating facilities.Others stay at a wilderness lodge on the bears'migration route to view the vigorous creatures.These lodges can be reached only by air and feature luxury food and living arrangements.
Despite the large number of polar bears that visit Churchill each year,there is growing concern about the animals'future.Because the earth is getting warmer,the ice forms later in the year now and disappears sooner in the spring.As a result,polar bears have less time to hunt for seals.Polar bears can also find smaller animals,bird eggs and berries on land,but this kind of food is not sufficient to support the animals.
Polar bears are also affected by plastic and chemicals that get into the ocean.A research project carried out in northern Europe has found high concentrations of both plastic and chemicals in the tissue of polar bears.These materials and substances can damage the animals'internal organs,especially when the animals are not yet mature.Many people are researching polar bear health.Their goal is to gather the information that is needed to help save these animals.

8.Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell.Recent studies have found,among other things,that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain.According to Conrad King,the researcher who carried out the review,"more than any other senses,the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings.This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter."
Smell,which dictates the unbelievable complexity of food tastes,has always been the least understood of our senses.Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000distinct smells.Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000genes (基因),which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome.Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense.These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.
According to one study in the research review,smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users.They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads.The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry,and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites.
In contrast,the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers'impatience.Similarly,the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.
However,the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person.A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others.They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them.The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.

63.What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?C
A.The category of food smells.
B.The logical part of human brain.
C.The nature of human olfactory system.
D.The relationship between food and feelings.
64.Which of the following can help people concentrate?C
A.Bread.  B.Fruits.  C.Coffee.  D.Fast food.
65.What do we know from the last paragraph?C
A.Some people can recognize up to 50smells.
B.Every person has a different pattern of genes.
C.Different people are sensitive to different smells.
D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
66.What is the passage mainly about?B
A.Logic and behaviour.
B.Smell and its influence.
C.Sense ability and food tastes.
D.Olfactory genes and its system.
18.As the proverb goes,man struggles upwards; water flows downwards.Water runs downhill from mountaintops to streams,to rivers and to oceans.But downhill isn't the only way that water moves.A new study measures how water travels from country to country for human consumption.This flow isn't the type we usually think about.These scientists looked at the water used to grow and make the products which get shipped from nation to nation as imports or exports.They call this a flow of"virtual water".
We typically think about water as the liquid that flows from a tap.However,92%of the water used by people goes into growing crops,according to a water researcher Arjen Hoekstra.He recently studied the hidden travels of virtual water used in products made from things like crops and meats.These products are shipped around the world.
For example,consider a sugary soft drink.Hoekstra estimated that to produce one half-liter of the drink requires between 170and 310liters of water-about 95% is used to grow and process the ingredients(原料).Another 4% goes into the packaging and labeling.In Hoekstra's calculation,when one country produces a half-liter of soda and sells it abroad,it exports as much virtual water as would fill a large refrigerator.
According to Hoekstra's new report,dry countries like Israel and Kuwait,both in the Middle East,get the majority of their virtual water from other countries,through imported products.More surprisingly,some wetter countries,like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom,also get the majority of their virtual water from other places.That means that most of the water used to grow or produce the products and food consumed in those countries came from other countries.

Health insurance(保险) can be very expensive. Some working people do not make enough money to pay for it. In the US there is a program called Healthy Families. This program offers people health insurance at a low cost.

Families are charged about $7.00 a month for every child, and $10.00 for every adult. It costs much less than any other kind of health insurance. Having health insurance is very important. With this insurance, people can see a doctor when they are sick or hurt.

The program is not expensive at all, but many people are still not enrolling in it. People say that it still costs too much money. They need all of their money to pay for things like food and rent(租金).

It would be great if everyone could have health insurance. People are working hard to come up with ways to make this happen. One idea is to make the Healthy Families Program free for some people.

China has more than 30 intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) recognized by the UNESCO, including paper-cutting, the Dragon Boat Festival, Peking Opera, acupuncture(针灸) and so on. The organization adopted a decision that China’s “The Twenty-Four Solar Terms”(二十四节气) should be put on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016 in Ethiopia.

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms, knowledge of time and practices in agriculture, starts from the beginning of Spring and ends with the Greater Cold, moving in cycles. It developed through thee observation of the sun’s annual movement in China. In ancient time, the method of tugui, earth sundial(日暑), was used to measure the shadow of the sun for determining the solar terms.

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms came into being and developed in close relationship with Chinese agricultural production. At the initial(最初的) stage of agricultural development, people began to explore the seasonal rules in the agricultural production to meet the needs in seeding, harvesting and other activities. Gradually, they formed the concept of “seed in spring, grow in summer, harvest in autumn and store in winter”. During the spring and autumn periods, the agricultural production was highly influenced by the seasonal changes, thus forming the concept of Solar Terms.

As a traditional Chinese knowledge system of time with a history of thousands of years, the Twenty-Four Solar Terms clearly expresses the concepts of respect for nature, and harmony between man and nature. Created by Chinese ancestors, it has functioned as a complete set of weather calendar(日历) to guide the agricultural production in China. It has also been introduced into North Korea, Japan and other neighboring countries and still used in Japan. The Chinese heritage has provably influenced the people’s way of thinking and behaving and will continue to be an important carrier of Chinese cultural identity.

A. was used to measure the shadow of the sun

B. has not been listed as one intangible cultural heritage of humanity

C. repeats from the Beginning of Spring to the Greater Cold every year

A. the Twenty-Four Solar Terms only influenced spring and autumn

B. the Twenty-Four Solar Terms had something to do with agriculture

C. people cared about the changes of weather just for fun

D. agricultural production highly influenced the seasonal changes

3.We can infer from the text that the Twenty-Four Solar Terms _______.
