【题目】The airline pilot announced over the intercom (对讲机), “Folks, I've got good news and bad news for you. The bad news is... we're lost. The good news is ... we're making great time!”

It's too easy to live our lives like that, isn't it? Making great time, but not sure if we're heading in the right direction.

It's been said, “Millions_expect_immortality_______不朽)_but_do_not_know_what_to_do_with_themselves_on_a_rainy_Sunday_afternoon.” The problem is: They know they would like to achieve something important with their lives or to make a difference, but when it comes to making the journey towards those destinations (目的地), they feel stuck. In short, they are lost.

Author and speaker Danny Cox, in his book Seize The Day, tells of a man who made a great success of his life in spite of many hardships. He didn't want to just sleepwalk through life, nor look back someday and feel regret. The moment that finally turned this man's life around was when he sat down and asked himself four important questions:

·What do I really want?

·What will it cost?

·Am I willing to pay the price?

·When is the best time to start paying the price?

It occurs to me that one of these questions is the most difficult: What do I really want? We need to spend enough time deciding on the answer. But once we figure it out, the other questions will be easy.

Answer these four questions and we will get clear on the direction we want to take our life. Devote ourselves to these answers and we'll make great time.

【题目】Because of the financial crisis in the US and UK, college students are beginning to struggle to find ways to pay their tuition fees and accommodations.

Recently, two major US student loan (贷款) lenders, Citibank and JPMorgan Chase, announced they were leaving the student loan industry altogether. Because banks currently have a lack of credit, they are reluctant to offer students low-interest loans that need a several-year wait for any return of interest.

In the US, many undergraduates fill up their financial needs with a private loan, although the majority can get government-funded loans. In the 2015-2016 academic year, $ 17 billion in private student loans was used to finance higher education. The lack of private funding has yet to be covered and will hit many US students hard.

Across the Atlantic, UK students have been less troubled by the crisis. Most undergraduates in the UK cover their university expenses with government-funded loans and grants. Their biggest concern is a sudden increase in student rent.

Most young professionals now rent houses, since 80 percent of UK mortgage schemes (按揭计划) have disappeared—a direct result of the credit crisis. This has boosted the house rent market.

In large cities, UK students are paying almost 6.5 percent more in rent than the previous year. Figures from the UK organization Accommodation for Student show students in big cities such as London paying an average weekly rent of $ 203.

Yet, despite students’ suffering, the number of this year’s university applications is expected to grow. During economic slumps, people regard further education as a way to survive tough job market.

【题目】1Moving from high school into college can be especially different because of the freedom students experience in college along with a new set of expectations.

In high school, students usually live at home, and their parents take care of all their physical needs such as food and housing. 2Parents are also there to help with and make sure that the student’s homework is done. During the school day, students rarely have free time. They go directly from one class to another. Teachers are always around to tell the students what to do. 3So students can often complete their homework and reading in a short time.

4They may be responsible for shopping, paying bills, and laundry. They also may have to cook their own meals. Their parents are not around to help with homework or even to check that it has been done. Contrary to students in high school, students in college may have a lot of free time between classes, but must discipline themselves to use this time productively or homework and other assignments. 5

【题目】We humans are superstitious, believing that Friday the 13th is bad luck and finding a penny is good luck. Here, then, are three of the most common superstitions.

Careful with that mirror

According to folktales, breaking a mirror is sure to bring yourself seven years of bad luck. The superstition seems to arise from the belief that mirrors don’t just reflect your image; they hold bits of your soul. That belief led old American Southerners to cover mirrors in a house when someone died, for fear that their soul might be trapped inside.

Like the number three, the number seven is often associated with luck. Seven years is a long time to be unlucky, so people have come up with solutions after breaking a mirror. These include touching a piece of the broken mirror to a tombstone or powdering the broken mirror.

Knock on wood

This phrase is designed to break away from bad luck: “Breaking that mirror didn’t bring me any trouble. Knock on wood.” The phrase may come from old tales about good spirits in trees or from an association with the Christian cross.

No umbrellas inside

…And not just because you’ll hurt someone’s eyes. Opening an umbrella indoors is supposed to bring bad luck. The origins of this belief vary from a story of an ancient woman who happened to have opened her umbrella moments before her house fell to the tale of a British prince who accepted two umbrellas from a visiting king and died within months.

1What may bring good luck?

A. Dating on Friday the 13th. B. Knocking on wood.

C. Opening an umbrella inside. D. Breaking a mirror.

2What should you do to drive bad luck away after breaking a mirror?

A. Hide the pieces for seven years. B. Put the pieces in a tombstone.

C. Cover the other mirrors in a house. D. Make the pieces into powder.

3Which phrase may originate(起源) from religion?

A. Careful with that mirror. B. Knock on wood.

C. No umbrellas inside. D. Lucky number seven.
