In between all the measures to battle the severe air pollution in Delhi, India, there’s one more option----a bar that has “pure air”.

Founded by Aryavir Kumar, Oxy Pure, Delhi’s first-ever oxygen bar, offers 15 minutes of 80-90 percent pure oxygen, costing Rs 299 ($4.2). Customers are given a lightweight tube for oxygen intake. The device (装置) is placed near the customers’ noses through which they are advised to breathe in the oxygen.

The bar also offers its customers several aromas (气味) to go with oxygen, including lemongrass, cherry and more. According to the aroma people choose, each session promises to improve sleep patterns and digestion, cure headaches, and even work as a treatment for depression (抑郁).

Bonny Irengbam, a senior sales assistant at the bar, said, “Some people, who try it for the first time, will feel relaxed and fresh. But only people who do this regularly will get real benefits. By regularly, I mean once or twice a month. We don’t encourage back-to-back sessions, as increased levels of oxygen in the body can make a person dizzy.”

Dr. Rajesh Chawla, a senior doctor at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said, “Even if you breathe in the so-called pure oxygen for two hours in a day, you will go back to breathing the polluted air for the rest of the 22 hours. The concept is purely money-driven.”

Recalling the first few months of the bar, Irengbam admitted that people were skeptical. “Many people criticized, saying we were selling air. Others were simply scared to breathe through the tube.”

Irengbam said the bar saw a significant rise in the number of customers two to three days after Diwali, an Indian festival mainly celebrated by fireworks and lights, as the pollution levels were high.

1What do we know about the oxygen intake?

A.It was not well-received at first.B.It will always cause side effects.

根据文章倒数第二段“Recalling the first few months of the bar, Irengbam admitted that people were skeptical.” 故选A项。

2

根据文章第四段“But only people who do this regularly will get real benefits. By regularly, I mean once or twice a month.”

根据文章第五段“Even if you breathe in the so-called pure oxygen for two hours in a day, you will go back to breathing the polluted air for the rest of the 22 hours. The concept is purely money-driven.”

根据文章第一段“In between all the measures to battle the severe air pollution in Delhi, India, there’s one more option----a bar that has “pure air”.”

The chief problem in dealing with foreign motorists is not so much remembering that they are different from you, but that they are largely variable. Cross a frontier(边境) without adjusting and you can be in deep trouble.

One of the greatest gulfs separating the driving nations is the Atlantic Ocean. Or rather, it is the mental distance between the European and the American motorist, particularly the South American motorist. Compare, for example, an English driver at a set of traffic lights with a Brazilian.

Very rarely will an Englishman try to anticipate(预先准备) the green light by moving off. You will find the occasional someone who watches for the yellow light to come up on the set of lights. However, he will not go until he receives the lawful signal. Brazilians view the thing quite differently. If, in fact, they see traffic lights, they regard them as a kind of roadside decoration.

The natives of North America are much more disciplined. They show this in their addiction to driving in one lane(车道) and sticking to it—even if it means settling behind some great truck for many miles.

To prevent other drivers from falling into wrong ways, American motorists try always to stay close behind the vehicle in front which can make it impossible to make a real lane change. European visitors are always falling into this trap. They return to the Old World still waving their arms in disappointment because while driving in the State in their cars they kept failing to get off the highway when they wanted to and were swept along to the next city.

However, one nation above all others lives cautiously by its traffic regulations — the Swiss. In Switzerland, if you were simply to anticipate a traffic light, the chances are that the motorist behind you would take your number and report you to the police. There are slight regional variations among the French, German and Italian speaking areas, but it is generally safe to assume that any car bearing a CH sticker will be driven with a high degree of discipline.

1How do American drivers behave on the road according to the passage?

A.They run the red light sometimes.

B.They drive close behind other drivers.

C.They care little about the traffic light.

D.They start their car at the yellow light.

2Which people take the traffic light most seriously?

A.The Swiss.B.The Brazilians.

C.The English.D.The French.

3The passage is mainly developed by ____.

A.analyzing causesB.describing changes

C.making comparisonsD.pointing out similarities

4Which part of a newspaper is the passage probably taken from?

A.Culture.B.Business.

C.Entertainment.D.Geography.

【题目】 “Suzanne Meyer, the assistant director of the English Language Institute at the University of Tennessee, says that many students need to learn how to collect information, and then evaluate the information and apply it to a new context. Meyer says: “1 . Question-asking activities help students to become better language learners. Question-asking may help develop critical thinking skills by allowing for more interactions.2 . When they are confident, they can have more interaction. That extra interaction might lead to critical thinking.”

How can you practice asking questions? There are many strategies to improve question-asking and develop critical thinking skills. 3 .

If students were reading a new text, they would design a series of questions using three different steps. In the first step, students create questions about information in the text that they are reading. In the second step, students create questions about how the information in the text connects to their own life. In the third step, students create questions about abstract ideas – ideas that came up in the questions about themselves.4 .

Practical Tips: Meyer says that when teachers tell students which questions to answer, students are less likely to be creative about the types of questions that they ask. 5 . Try making a list of questions that go from concrete to abstract. Check with your teacher to make sure that your grammar is correct, and try to practice in the classroom.

A.So, practice developing your own questions!

B.People who can ask questions should be very confident.

C.People can ask questions freely when they feel relaxed.

D.If people take some steps, they can find some useful question-asking patterns.

E.There are many benefits to using question-asking activities with English learners.

F.One possible strategy is to use question-asking patterns that start with concrete questions and move to abstract questions.

G.If students follow these three steps, they have not only practiced creative ways to ask questions, they have also started practicing critical thinking.
