How early must a student begin preparing for an international education?Lisa Jain, the representative of The College Board in India showed her idea here clearly.
Many students who want to study abroad believe they need to start planning for it only in Grade12.What they don't realize is the amount of time,thought,and effort it requires.That is why a student should begin the ground work in Grade 10in order to gain a clear undestanding of what the college application process requires and to be prepared to deal with the pressures that will follow.
Focus on school grades and marks.It is important to try your best to perform well in academics throughout high school and not just in Grade 12.

Begin research.Which country do you want to apply to colleges in?What do you want to study at college?Researching early and start reflecting on what you'd enjoy learning will make the college and major selection process less overwhelming in Grade 12.
All your efforts in Grade 10-11will help ease your burden in Grade 12.If you do everything at the right time,you will find the process enjoyable and realize there is hardly a reason to stress.Just remember:The early birds catch the worms!

In the passage,Lisa Jain offered her advice to those wanting to study abroad, pointing out that,to be prepared,a student should begin the ground work early in Grade 10,like focusing on good grades from the very beginning.
The early birds catch the worms! What a thought-provoking proverb, which reminds us to plan ahead of time and make full preparations so as to achieve success. In my opinion,"the early birds"means the people who always make early plans and adequate preparations, and"catch worms"indicates catching opportunities and harvesting success.Just as another saying goes, opportunities are for those who are prepared.Only if a person has an early start to get everything ready can he possess the ability to seize the chance and accomplish his goal.
Yu Ming Hong, the founder of the famous educational institution New Oriental,is a good illustration of the truth that success lies in an early start and good preparations. When studying in Peking university, aiming to find a good job in Beijing after graduation,Yu Ming Hong decided to improve his major English. So,from the freshman year,he kept reciting words every day and stuck to it all the way through his college life. With an early start and constant efforts,by the time he graduated,he had become the student who had the largest vocabulary among his classmates, which contributed directly to his good grades in English and thus he successfully became an English teacher in Peking University and later set up the well-known school.Undoubtedly,it was his"being the early bird"that brought him his success today.
Therefore,be an early bird, and you will find it pays off.But how?First of all,a clear goal is essential, which will lead us to where we want to go.Secondly, plan the day and manage our time.Early birds never fails to carefully plan and make the best of his time. And then painstaking efforts follow..

Step2:Splitting the List into Target,Reach and Safety Schools
In general,students will want to apply to three types of schools:Target,Reach and Safety schools.It is up to you how many applications you send,but a good mix would be more target than reach,and at least one safety.You will need to take your list,and now decide which are your top picks,which are attainable for you academically,which are affordable for you only with aid,and refine  (精炼)  your broad list into a group of schools that gives you the best chance for success.Talk to an admissions counselor at your high school if you have questions about this.
Step 3:Completing and Sending Applications to Colleges
Once your list is complete you are ready to apply to college by completing and sending in applications!College applications take time to complete-you have to write essays,ask for recommendations and get test scores sent to schools-so stay organized!A1l colleges will require these types of application materials,so start thinking about these items well before October or December.Once you complete and send them,then  you have successfully applied to college.

16.I first heard this story a few years ago from a girl.Probably the story is one of those mysterious.bits of folklore that reappear every few years. However,I still like to think that it really did happen, somewhere, sometime.
They were going to Fort Lauderdale--three boys and three girls--and when they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine, dreaming of golden beaches and sea tides as the gray, cold spring of New York vanished behind them.
As the bus passed through New Jersey, they'began to notice Vingo. He sat in front of them, dressed in a plain ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age.He kept chewing the inside of his lip a lot, frozen into complete silence.
Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson's,and everybody got off except  Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder about him:perhaps he was a sea captain,a runaway from his wife,an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus,one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.
¨We're going to Florida,"she said brightly."I hear it's really beautiful."
"It is,"he said quietly,as if remembering something he had tried to forget.
"Want some wine?"she said.He thanked her and retreated again into his silence. After a while, she went back to the others, and Vingo nodded in sleep.
In the morning, they awoke outside another Howard Johnson's,and this time Vingo went in.The girl insisted that he join them.He seemed very shy, and.ordered black coffee and smoked nervously as the young people chattered about sleeping on beaches. When they returned to the bus,the girl sat with Vingo again, and after a while, slowly and painfully,he began to tell his story. He had been in jail in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home.
¨Are you married?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"she said.
"Well, when I was in jail I wrote to my wife,"he said.¨‘I told her that I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it,if the kids kept asking questions, she;could just forget me.I'd understand.Get a new guy,I said-she's a wonderful woman-and forget about me.I told her she didn't have to write me.And she didn't.Not for three and a half  years."
"And you're going home now,not knowing?"
"Yeah,"he said shyly.‘‘Last week, when I was sure the parole was coming through,I wrote her again. There's a big oak tree just as you come into town,I told her that if she didn't have a new guy and if she'd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I'd get off and come home.If she didn't want me,forget it-no handkerchief, and I'd go on through."
"Wow,"the girl exclaimed."Wow."
She told the others, and soon all of them were in it,caught up in the approach of Brunswick, looking at the pictures Vingo showed them of his wife and three children.
Now they were 20 miles from Brunswick, and the young people took over window seats, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree.Vingo stopped looking, tightening his face,as if fortifying himself against still another disappointment.
Then Brunswick was 10 miles, and then five. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying. All except Vingo.Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree.It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs-20 of them,30 of them, maybe hundreds. As the young people shouted, the old con slowly rose from his seat and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

6.阅读下面短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文.
Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything:animals, spiders, insects…
One day while walking through the woods the nice old man found a cocoon(茧)of a butterfly.He took it home.A few days later,a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.Then it seemed to stop making any progress.It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther.
Then the man decided to help the butterfly,so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon.
The butterfly then came out with ease.
But it had a swollen body and small,shriveled(萎缩的)wings.The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that,at any moment,the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body.Neither happened!In fact,the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.It never was able to fly.
What the kind-hearted man did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature's way of forcing fluid(液体)from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.If we were allowed to go through our life without any hardships,it would fail us.We would not be as strong as what we could have been.And we could never fly.

A kind man cut a cocoon open in order to lessen the pain of a butterfly when he saw it struggling out of the cocoon, only to find that it could never fly because of his help.
The story sets me thinking. Our life is more or less like this.Sometimes, struggles or obstacles in our life are a must for our growth. It is these struggles or obstacles that increase our willpower and contribute to our success.Without these trials,we could never achieve our life goal just as the butterfly did in the story.
Nowadays, with only one child in most families, parents do whatever they can to satisfy the child's needs and even do for him what should be done by himself.Consequently, the child is unable to look after himself without his parents'presence.Too much care from parents deprives children of chances to grow strong by conquering obstacles.
If I were a parent,I would first keep him well informed that life is never easy and that he should be ready to face any difficulties.Besides,I would expose him to the hardships in life instead of protecting him from difficulties, providing them with chances to fight for his bright future by conquering challenges..
