Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything:animals, spiders, insects…
One day while walking through the woods the nice old man found a cocoon(茧)of a butterfly.He took it home.A few days later,a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.Then it seemed to stop making any progress.It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther.
Then the man decided to help the butterfly,so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon.
The butterfly then came out with ease.
But it had a swollen body and small,shriveled(萎缩的)wings.The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that,at any moment,the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body.Neither happened!In fact,the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.It never was able to fly.
What the kind-hearted man did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature's way of forcing fluid(液体)from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.If we were allowed to go through our life without any hardships,it would fail us.We would not be as strong as what we could have been.And we could never fly.

A kind man cut a cocoon open in order to lessen the pain of a butterfly when he saw it struggling out of the cocoon, only to find that it could never fly because of his help.
The story sets me thinking. Our life is more or less like this.Sometimes, struggles or obstacles in our life are a must for our growth. It is these struggles or obstacles that increase our willpower and contribute to our success.Without these trials,we could never achieve our life goal just as the butterfly did in the story.
Nowadays, with only one child in most families, parents do whatever they can to satisfy the child's needs and even do for him what should be done by himself.Consequently, the child is unable to look after himself without his parents'presence.Too much care from parents deprives children of chances to grow strong by conquering obstacles.
If I were a parent,I would first keep him well informed that life is never easy and that he should be ready to face any difficulties.Besides,I would expose him to the hardships in life instead of protecting him from difficulties, providing them with chances to fight for his bright future by conquering challenges..

重要短语:in order to (为了),lessen the pain(减轻痛苦),sets sb thinking(让某人思考),more or less(或多或少),achieve one's life goal (实现某人的目标),satisfy one's needs (满足某人需要),look after (照顾),deprive sb of…(剥夺某人某物),keep sb well informed(使…被通知,告诉),be ready to do(乐意做某事),face any difficulties (面对任何挑战),expose sb to…(使某人接触,体验),instead of (相反),protect sb from…(保护某人免受…),fight for (为…而战),conquer challenges(征服挑战).
1.A kind man cut a cocoon open in order to lessen the pain of a butterfly when he saw it struggling out of the cocoon, only to find that it could never fly because of his help. A kind man cut a cocoon open in order to lessen the pain of a butterfly when he saw it struggling out of the cocoon".
1.It is these struggles or obstacles that increase our willpower and contribute to our success.
此处是强调句型,结构为"It+is/was+强调部分+that+…",如果去掉强调句型的骨架"It was/is …that",原句句子成分齐全,句意通顺.
2.If I were a parent,I would first keep him well informed that life is never easy and that he should be ready to face any difficulties.
4.I would expose him to the hardships in life instead of protecting him from difficulties, providing them with chances to fight for his bright future by conquering challenges.

A kind man cut a cocoon open in order to lessen the pain of a butterfly when he saw it struggling out of the cocoon, only to find that it could never fly because of his help.【高分句型一】(概括)
The story sets me thinking. Our life is more or less like this.Sometimes, struggles or obstacles in our life are a must for our growth. It is these struggles or obstacles that increase our willpower and contribute to our success.【高分句型二】Without these trials,we could never achieve our life goal just as the butterfly did in the story.(读了这个故事的感受)
Nowadays, with only one child in most families, parents do whatever they can to satisfy the child's needs and even do for him what should be done by himself.Consequently, the child is unable to look after himself without his parents'presence.Too much care from parents deprives children of chances to grow strong by conquering obstacles.(叙述当前父母溺爱子女的现象和由此造成的后果)
If I were a parent,I would first keep him well informed that life is never easy and that he should be ready to face any difficulties.【高分句型三】Besides,I would expose him to the hardships in life instead of protecting him from difficulties, providing them with chances to fight for his bright future by conquering challenges.【高分句型四】

16.My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live.Two dog walkers passed by and we heard one of them say,"Never seen that dog around here before."
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling(蹒跚) painfully up the hill.We bent down,talked gently to the dog and patted it.I checked and there was a collar.There was a phone number on the collar,but no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin.It didn't have many teeth left and,well,it just seemed done.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog's food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me.Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there.So,we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend made short work of the food.
Eventually we got her home.We gave her a blanket,more food,kept her warm and wondered what to do next.
After trying for many times we got a response from the number.A lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us.She explained that Tara had been her father's dog.She was very old and should probably be put to sleep,but the lady just couldn't bring herself to do it.So,Tara was safely returned home.

I was about to turn and go when an old,worn out dog walked between us and collapsed.Suddenly we had something more important than (our problem) to worry about.There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it.And here am I writing the story in my own home,in my own family.
In the song"Love Is Not a Fight"Warren Barfield talks about marriage.At one point he sings,"And if we try to leave,may God send angels to guard the door."

17.Walking,cycling or hopping on to public transport are the best ways to travel with a clean conscience.Yet cars remain an important option for many families because of its convenience. For people in rural areas,or with mobility problems,a car can be an essential lifeline.
Drive with style
No matter what kind of car you run,the least reliable part will be you:your driving style has a massive impact on the fuel needed, with acceleration,gear-changing and braking all playing a significant role.
Inching along at the pace of a child's tricycle might feel frugal but won't magically yield peak economy. In most modern cars, accelerate normally, changing up at 2,000rpm in a diesel,or 2,500rpm in a petrol-powered car.Once at a sensible steady speed, choose the highest gear that will let the engine run without labouring.
A number of eco-driving apps are available for smartphones,to help you improve your smoothness. The A Glass of Water iPhone app offers tips to help you avoid spilling a drop. The free RAC Traffic app is also a great way to avoid wasting fuel in traffic jams.
It's also important to:
●Check tyre pressures once a month.
●Leave junk at home.Carrying extra weight in the boot wastes excess fuel.
●Leave in good time and don't speed. An extra 10mph on the motorway will add 10% to your fuel bill.
Power plays
It may be decades before alternative fuels such as hydrogen become commonplace, but hybrid cars that use battery power to boost a petrol or diesel engine are already available in every category. It means many families might find an electric vehicle ideal as a second car.
Sell your wheels, still travel by car
If you need a car for short periods, such as shopping, and live in a city, then consider a short-term car-hire service such as Zipcar instead of owning a car.If you're travelling longer distances, pay your share of the fuel costs to someone who's already driving there.

14.The biggest danger facing airlines nowadays may not be a terrorist with a gun,but the man with portable computer in business class. In the last 16 years, pilots have reported well  over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference  (电磁干扰).The source of this interference remains not proved, but increasingly, experts are pointing the  blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players  and mobile telephones.
RTC.A.an organization which advises the aviation  (航空 )industry, has suggested that all  airlines ban such devices from being used during"critical"stages of flight  particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights.Cur-rently,rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some air-lines prevent passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are un-willing to carry out a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flight.
The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers.Experts know that portable devices send out radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But,because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory.they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.
The fact that aircraft may be fragile to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though,is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.
25.What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 16 years?D
A.They may have been caused by the damage to-the radio systems.

A.Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.
B.Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.
C.Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.
D.Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.
