2.Have you ever lost your car on a parking lot?You don't have a clue where your car is after shopping. Then you start walking around clicking on your car keys so the alarm goes off.It can be annoying, especially on a hot sunny day.
No,you needn't install(安装)an expensive GPS system to keep track of your car. That's too expensive. You would need to pay a monthly fee to use it.
But is there a way to track your vehicle without spending a fortune?Yes,now there is!A California-based company has created a tiny device that works with your smartphone, which could be exactly what you're looki ng for!
What is it?
It's called TrackR.It is a state-of-the-art tracking device the size of a coin. It's changing the way we keep track of the important things in our lives.
How does it work?
It's easy!Install the free TrackR app on your smartphone, connect the app to your device and you're ready to go!Simply attach TrackR to whatever you want to keep an eye on.The entire process of setting it up only takes 5 minutes or less.
You can attach it to your keys, briefcase, wallet, your latest tech gadgets and anything else you don't want to lose. Then use the TrackR app to locate your missing item in seconds.
If you forget where you have parked your car, pull out your smartphone and open the TrackR app.Tap on the"find device"button on the screen and the app will tell you the exact spot of the last known location of the TrackR.
What else can I do with TrackR?
The device is small and unnoticeable enough that you can attach it to your pet.Put it on their collar, and the issue of searching for them when they run away to nearby places will be over! You'll never waste a minute searching the whole house for it.
TrackR even comes with a double-sided glue so you can stick it to your laptop or under your bike seat.Track down and punish the thieves who steal your expensive things!
How much does it cost?
You're probably thinking that this device is very expensive.False!TrackR only costs $29!That's a small price to pay for peace of mind, isn't it?

17.Most Cancer Is Out of Our Control

LIFESTYLE OR BAD LUCK?
IT DEPENDS ON THE CANCER

BASAL-CELL CARCINOMA
The most common skin cancer is triggered by exposure to UV rays.
LUNG
Smoking,and the carcinogens in tobacco
smoke, are the main drivers of lung cancer.

LIVER
Risk of this cancer
increases with age and heavy alcohol use.

We think we know what causes cancer:smoking,the sun's UV rays,tumor-causing genes we inherit from Mom and Dad.But these factors alone can't explain why cancer in its many forms is poised to edge out heart disease as America's No.1killer within the next few years.That rise has sparked a spate of research into how much of cancer is within our control and how much of it is simply a roll of the genetic dice.
Now,in an eye-opening study published in Science,researchers report that the majority of cancer types are the result of pure chance,the product of random genetic mutations(突变) that occur when stem cells-which keep the body chugging along,replacing older cells as they die off-make mistakes copying the cells'DNA.
Cristian Tomasetti at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that the more stem cells there are in certain kinds of tissues and the more often they divide,the more likely that tissue is to develop cancer over a person's lifetime.About 65% of cancers are the result of these DNA mistakes made by stem cells.
Only a small proportion of a tissue's cells are stem cells,which are essentially templates(范本) for making more tissue.The catch is that this kind of DNA copying is also the process behind cancer,which is triggered by cells that pick up mutations in their genes when they divide.
The element of chance does not,however,mean you should stop wearing sunscreen or take up smoking."My biggest fear is that people will do nothing.The opposite is true,"says Tomasetti,who stresses that while we may not be able to prevent all tumors,we can focus on early detection and taking advantage of lifesaving treatments like chemotherapy and radiation,among other things."We need to do everything we did before,but we want to do it even more than before."

The message I get from the passage is that about the future people from Mainland China are most optimistic, which,as a good quality,is greatly emphasized in the picture.
I don't think this result is surprising. In my opinion,Chinese people have at least two reasons to be optimistic.Firstly,China has a most dynamic economy and her people's living conditions are constantly being improved, which increases their faith in the future.Secondly, compared to many other countries and regions,China enjoys a peaceful and stable social environment, the positive effects of which can never be overestimated..
As a Chinese student,I feel proud of my country. At the same time,I have great faith in her future, too.I think I will learn to be an optimistic person because whatever situation we happen to be in,only positive outlooks can bring us hope and courage to meet challenges one after another.(157).

12.Dear Mr.Jones,
I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from someone living as near as your next-door neighbor; but I have to raise a subject that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing.
You may have noticed that I have a line of apple trees running alongside the fence that separates our two gardens.You may also have taken pleasure in the frequent sight of your two children sitting on your lawn directly by the fence.And you may also have noticed that my apple trees,so to speak,bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest.
It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that interest.And it is not only natural,but,I acknowledge,quite legal,for them occasionally to show that interest by picking all the apples that hang over on your side of the fence.
But to be plain with you,Mr.Jones,I am tired of seeing your children,day after day,tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees,and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them.I am,if anything,even more tired of waking up these fine autumn mornings,to find even the apples on my side of the fence much less in number.I know this is the work of your children,since last night I was woken at midnight by the noise they were making climbing one of my trees,and (as they may have told you) chased them home.
While I am on the subject,I am at least grateful to you for keeping your bonfires on the far side of your garden this year.Last year neither I nor your children had any apples,because the smoke from your bonfire destroyed all the flowers before the apples had time to form.I hope that next year-for the first time since I came to this village-I shall have my apples,and your children will have theirs and that the sight of the line of apple trees will be a pride to us both.
Otherwise,I shall not express my displeasure simply in writing to you, but shall have to refer the matter to those capable of taking stronger action.
Yours sincerely,
J.Smith.25.What does the writer mainly complain about in his letter?D

B.Mr.Jones'children climbing the apple trees.
C.Mr.Jones'children tearing off the branches of the trees.
D.Mr.Jones'children picking too many of his apples.
26.How is Mr.Jones likely to feel after reading the letter?A
A.ashamed
B.grateful

27.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?B

C.Mr.Smith is likely to have come to this town for no more than two years.
D.The writer considers writing a letter is a better way to talk about the matter with Mr.Jones.
