【题目】When 18thcentury scientists first came across Australias platypus (鸭嘴兽),they thought it was a trick. It is not surprising that the platypus made people confused. This funnylooking animal has feet and is a kind of warmblooded mammal(哺乳动物).

While other mammals usually keep their blood at around 37 degrees, the platypus has a lower body temperature of 32 degrees. As to its appearance, the platypus mouth is not really like the ducks; its mouth actually looks a bit softer. The platypus closes its eyes when swimming instead of watching its hunters. It uses its mouth to pick up outside information made by the creatures underwater.

Strangest of all,the platypus is a mammal that can lay eggs. And there is only one other kind of mammal that can lay eggs, the echidna(针鼹鼠) of Australia. Both the platypus and the echidna lay soft shelled eggs, and both feed their young with their own milk that comes out of their skin. These animals also walk in a way that is similar to crocodiles (鳄鱼),with legs on the sides of their bodies rather than under them.

Though pretty in a special way,the platypus is actually one of the few mammals that are poisonous.A male platypus has knifelike bones on its back legs which have enough poison to kill a dog.

The platypus has the honor of being one of the oldest mammals in the world.Until the early 20thcentury,it was hunted for its fur,but it is now protected.Although the platypus is easily influenced by pollution,it is not under any immediate threat.

【题目】阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英文短文。

Every morning, on his way to work, Mike passed an old man who was always at the same place with a cup in his hand hoping to get a bit of change from those who passed by. For most people, this person was someone to be ignored as if he didn’t exist, someone who they didn’t want to be bothered with. However, Mike would always say good morning to him and wish him a nice day and sometimes would drop a dollar or two in his cup. This behavior went on for several years until one day before retirement.

He told the man that he would no longer pass by because it was his last day on the job. The man took his hand and shook it warmly saying that he had always looked forward to seeing Mike not because he dropped a few dollars in his cup. He said he would miss him because he was one of the few people who said hello and bid him good day. The man also said that his warm words always brightened his day and helped him to continue.

We all have the power of words and we often do not recognize that some can be devastating(毁灭性的) while some can be encouraging.

【题目】When tea was first brought to England between 1652 and 1654, it was so expensive that only the rich could buy it. It was said that an old couple had some sent to them as a great treat. But they did not know how it ought to be used. Eventually they boiled the leaves, put some of them on a piece of bacon for dinner, ate the leaves, and threw the tea soup away. However, tea quickly proved popular enough to replace ale(麦芽酒)as the national drink of England after King Charles II and his Portuguese wife began to follow this foreign tea tradition.

Before the introduction of tea into Britain, the English had two main meals — breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was ale, bread and beef. Dinner was a long, massive meal at the end of the day. It was no wonder that Anna, the Duchess of Bedford (1788 — 1861) experienced a________in the late afternoon. So she invited friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal at five o’clock in her castle. The menu centered around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, and, of course, tea. This summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking the fields”.

The practice of inviting friends to come for tea in the afternoon was quickly picked up by other social hostesses. A common pattern of service soon came into practice. The first pot of tea was made in the kitchen and carried to the lady of the house who waited with her invited guests, surrounded by fine porcelain(瓷器)from China. The first pot was warmed by the hostess from a second pot (usually silver) that was kept heated over a small flame. Food and tea was then passed among the guests, the main purpose of the visiting being conversation.
