13.Societies all over the world name places in similar ways.Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people.Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name.Frequently it happens that a place has two names:One is named by the people and the other by the government.As in many areas,old habits died hard,and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations.Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place.This is in keeping with traditions in many countries----in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places.Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after.The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases.If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus----obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places.Bras Basah Road is an interesting example,"Base Basah"means"wet rice"in Malay(马来语).Now why would anyone want to name a road"Wet Rice Road"?The reason is simple.During the pioneering days,wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes.There is"Circular Road"for one.Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes,like"Paya Lebar Crescent".This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road,makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

B.Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.
C.The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.
D.Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

Frequently it happens that a place has two names:One is named by the people and the other by the government可知,通常一个地方有二个名字,一个是人们的习惯叫法另一个是政府命名,故正确答案为B.
37:D 推断题.由该单词下文"…the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost."
38:A 细节题. Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place."
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places.Bras Basah Road is an interesting example…"
40:A 推断题. Societies all over the world name places in similar ways."

4.Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started.Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence,"In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence".Given that this is the case, why aren't students taught to manage conflicts the way they are taught to solve math problems,or stay physically fit?
A report on violence among high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with daily small matters such as a relatively minor insult (侮辱).For example,a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime.Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.
There will always be conflicts in schools, but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence.Learning to resolve(化解)conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

8.Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of an acquaintance(熟人).I have forgotten the name of an old lady,who was a customer on the paper routein my hometown when I was a twelve-year-old boy.Yet it remains in my memory that she taught me a lesson in  forgivenesssthat I shall never forget.
On a winter afternoon,a friend and I had nothing to do and we decided to throw stones onto the roof of the old lady's house from a spot near her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how  the stoneschanged to missiles(投射物),as they rolled to the roof's edge and shot out into  the yard like comets(彗星) falling from the sky.I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out.The stone was too smooth,however,so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window.At the sound of broken glass,we knew we were in trouble.Immediately,we ran away in a hurry.
I was too scared about getting caught that first night,so I can't sleep well.I was concerned about  the old lady with the broken window in winter.I was afraid of being scolded seriously by the old lady and my parents.However,a few days later,when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered,I started to feel guilty for her misfortune.She still greeted me with  a smileeach day when I gave her the paper.With days going on,I was no longer able to act comfortably in front of her.
Several days later,I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the  seven dollars and thus I would cover the cost of her window.I put the money in an  envelope with a note  explainingthat I was sorry for  breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars should cover the cost for repairing it.
